About

With over 16 years of experience in mass transport manufacturing, I possess a strong understanding of safety standards and requirements for producing reliable products. I excel in project planning, management, and execution, ensuring on-time and within-budget delivery. My adaptability is evident in my work across various industries, including electronic equipment design, site decommissioning, and plant equipment design.

As a Self-Employed/Contract Engineer, I specialise in designing bespoke mass transport products like toilet cabins and seating. Notably, I have contributed to the successful development of rail passenger seat products, focusing on comfort, features, and low weight. My expertise covers mechanical and electrical systems, encompassing elements such as reading lights, USB ports, and mains sockets.

Throughout my career, I have held positions such as Engineering Project Lead, Senior Design Engineer, and Systems Manager & Engineering Manager. I am experienced in managing projects, delivering prototypes on time and within budget, and continuously improving product designs. With a focus on composite materials, sheet metal, and cast aluminium, I ensure compliance with industry standards like EN 45545, PRM-TSI, and GM/RT2100. As a member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology, I prioritise professional development and staying abreast of industry advancements.

Education

  • University of Wales (Bangor) MEng (Hons), Computer Systems Engineering, 2:1 with Honors 1997 – 2002 Activities and Societies: Year in industry experience with Nortel Networks carrying out New Product Introduction engineering and Radio Frequency circuit design for 3G power supplies.

Other experience

  • PLC PROGRAMER I have programmed Mitsubishi and Crouzet logic controllers (PLC) for use in toilet cabin projects. One project operated a pair of bi-parting doors, each driven entirely separately to the other requiring a lot of synchronising techniques as well as monitoring many inputs and providing user feedback for passengers as well as fault finding methods for maintenance staff. The other project was for a single panel door of a completely different design, and also integrated the control of other systems like the hygiene facilities for passengers.
  • Manufacturing process Implemented a new Material Requirements Planning system for a business with an aluminium foundry with CNC machining capability, and also a composites manufacturing site with 5-axis CNC, as well as full assembly capabilities. This required a deep understanding of all processes and capabilities within the business to effectively build the MRP database. The knowledge acquired during this project spanned from obtaining raw materials, right through each production process including sub-contracted processes and items, through to batching, quality control and delivery to the end customer.
