I am a second year mechanical engineering student, I'm highly driven and passionate about engineering and design. Nearly all my hobbies include my engineering passion to some degree, I love to build my own equipment from scratch, my own rockets from scratch, my own fishing lures and tackle, and telescope mounts. I currently work for a firm that designs, builds and certifies industrial lifting equipment. I've been involved in all aspects of the design process, from analyzing the factory/warehouse/site layout, determining adequacy of existing structures, creating weldments from structural steel to serve as load bearing members for cranes/ hoists, to finally the design of the under-the-hook lifting device (often using pneumatics or mechanical actuators). In my personal life, I've designed my home brewery, including a converted chest freezer into keg refrigerator/beer dispenser, and a climate controlled mini-fermentation room with multiple chambers for different fermentation temperatures. I'm also currently working on a amateur rocket with the goal of reaching Mach 1, which has seen me utilizing a lot of 3D printing custom components suited to transonic speeds from different plastics. I have designed various machinery including road tankers, generating sets, pumps, compressors, hydraulic mechanical handling equipment, lifting gear and even a battery powered mobile hoist for Torness Nuclear power station. I have received industrial training in the UK from National Grid, the Lifting Equipment Engineers Association (LEEA) and the National Fluid Power Centre (NFPC). I am an expert with Inventor, and in recent years have also become competent with Fusion 360 and Solidworks. CAD software is so good nowadays, that it is quite easy to model something. Where I have proven to be outstanding is with my application of mechanical design analysis and enough experience to know how to apply theoretical methods to reality and what works. Where necessary I can present comprehensive design substantiation e.g. to meet design standards such as BS / ISO or machinery directive and obtain CE / UKCA marking. I am expert with MathCAD and Excel for producing and presenting calculations that have held up to scrutiny. Where appropriate I will produce FEA with Inventor and ANSYS for stress analysis of more complex geometry and loading situations. During my Postgraduate Diploma in Engineering (later incorporated to MSc), I studied the numerical methods involved in FEA, and this combined with experience in aftermarket looking at part failure with Howden Process Compressors, now informs how I use these tools and allows me to use FEA effectively and realistically. I have solid understanding of key manufacturing processes including machining, fabrication, welding, and fitting, having always worked closely with the shop floor, soaking up knowledge and enjoying the camaraderie.
