Revolutionary Meditation Bench
A standard meditation bench made of wood gets a makeover. We are looking to create a fully-adjustable, lightweight, travel version of a wooden meditation bench for manufacture via injection molding (plastic). Here is a reference for what it usually looks like (not what we are making): http://www.samadhicushions.com/Meditation-Bench-Seiza-Kneeling-Bench-p/C-564.htm?Click=9556 The bench consists of 2 legs, of the same size, 7.5 inches tall. Atop is a main sitting piece, which is at right angles to the legs and is 18 inches long and 7 inches deep. All parts are ½ inch thick, or thinner. The bench needs to be able to support the weight of an adult. The main sitting piece (piece “A” in the sketch) needs to be rotational such that it can be tilted forward in order to create an angled seating platform. This adjustment is to conform to the seating angle of the meditator to create comfortable sitting position. The piece must lock out once in place at the desired setting, in order to provide stability while sitting on it (aka it does not move). The legs must also be retractable, such that they fold in towards the main sitting piece in some manner, in order to make the bench small and practical for travelling or storage. When folded, teethe assembly should ideally be no more than 1 inch thick.
Vitascope - a wearable for a wearable - stethoscope accessory
Idea Background/Context I am interested in developing a wearable for a wearable. Healthcare professionals (HCP) carry a wearable with them all day everyday, the stethoscope. The stethoscope helps HCP listen to the heart, lungs, abdominal organs, neck and measure blood pressure. Three of the four core vital signs can be measured using a stethoscope. Heart rate can be measured by listening to the heart sounds and counting the number of beats in one minute (or 30 seconds then x 2, 20 seconds x 3, or 15 seconds x 4, or 10 seconds x 6 etc.). Similarly you can count the respiratory rate or number of breaths per minute. It is also used with an inflatable cuff (sphygmomanometer) on the arm to measure blood pressure. The fourth vital sign is temperature, which is obviously not measured using a stethoscope. Vital sign monitoring is fundamental component of all aspects of healthcare care, as changes are used to identify clinical deterioration. As such, these parameters must be measured frequently, consistently and recorded accurately to be most useful. Many, but not all, hospitalized patients are on vital signs monitors that continuously collect heart rate with a 3-lead ECG, respiratory rate and oxygen saturation. However, most health care takes place in ambulatory care settings (e.g., clinks, outpatient departments, private offices). In most cases, vital sign measurement and recording can be cumbersome and time consuming. Goal To design a medical device that attaches to the bell of any standard stethoscope that when applied to a patient’s chest it measures heart rate, respiratory rate and temperature and displays this on a screen. Essentially a smart-stethoscope (i.e., Apple iWatch, FitBit or other similar wearable device for a stethoscope). Use Cases Intermittent Use • Measure vital signs by applying the device to a person’s chest (e.g., heart rate, temperature, respirator rate) then wirelessly (Bluetooth LE) transmit this to the patients chart or mobile app in clinic or hospital setting • Could place finger on device to measure blood oxygen saturation • Could be used by non-healthcare professionals (e.g., patients at home) or by low skill health workers in low to middle income/developing countries, to measure vital signs Continuous Use • In neonatal resuscitation (e.g., when a baby is born) device could be applied to the baby’s chest to display vital signs to guide users through resuscitation • It could be strapped to patient/users chest to provide vital sign measurements as make-shift monitor Functions • Measure heart rate by single-lead electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG) • Measure temperature by axillary (armpit) probed (e.g.. iThermonitor by Raiing Medical Inc) • Calculate respiratory rate via respiratory sinus arrhythmia from the ECG/EKG or using and accelerometer • Measure blood oxygen saturation using photoplethysmogram (PPG) • Accelerometer for activity tracking • Gyroscope for position sensing of device Design Features • Attachable to the chest piece +/- neck and tubing of the stethoscope (e.g., CardioSleeve)* • Should not need to dismantle stethoscope to attach device • Device may require assembly onto stethoscope • Minimalism design • Compact single-unit design • Comfortable/natural feel in hand • Light-weight • Device could be used independently of stethoscope** • Could be any shape but round/oval/square/rectangular preferable • On device LCD/OLED colour screen*** • MicroUSB charging port • Potentially 1-2 buttons • Perhaps circular click-able ring like Nest thermostat, in stainless steel Important Notes about Design *There are many different stethoscope brands and between and within brand variation of stethoscope design. Ideally, the device would have a universal attachment mechanism to any and all types of stethoscopes **If used independently of the stethoscope, the device could have a electronic diaphragm (flat listening surface) with microphone to “hear” heart and breath sounds and an 3.5 mm headphone jack to physically connect the device to an external audio device (e.g., headphones, speaker, computing device). Similar devices include Taal by Muse India Inc, Eko Devices, Littmann digital stethoscope etc.) ***Many stethoscopes have two diaphragms (flat listening surfaces) on either side, and you twist on/off to listen from each side. One side is pediatric the other is adult or pediatric and neonatal. Ideally, both listening surfaces would be usable with the device attached. In the attached sketch one of the diapharms is covered by the screen. The screen may need to be designed uniquely to accommodate this (e.g., shape, size, position) Material for Encasing/Case/Housing • High-impact ABS thermoplastic • Water resistant • Colours: black, white, other colour options possible Similar Products/Examples • The attached file contains images of stethoscope accessories, examples of various digital stethoscopes or ECG measurement wearables • The names of the company or devices are included for web searching Required Product Design Services • 3D modeling and concept design End-use of Designs • For proof-of-concept and pre-prototype market evaluation in surveys and interviews
