Description:
We control how power flows through your home. This device, a hub device, orchestrator, controller, manager, is a small electronic appliance will sit on the table or bookcase in homes. It functions similarly to a home automation hub (e.g. Smart Things, Wink, etc.), but is smarter than a hub. It connects to smart meters, home Z-wave automation equipment, Wi-Fi networks and Ethernet. When you’re using too much power, it throttles back your home’s usage. When more power is available, it throttles usage back up.

It needs to look good, look modern, simple but elegant. We’re trying to exude confidence, control, action, durability. It needs to fit in with a modern home and look good. Attached are model files of that include the minimum features of the circuit boards and connectors. Also included are drawings of the components included on the circuit boards as well as additional pictures/descriptions of the circuit board stack. Start with the “Enclosure Presentation” file and go from there.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The bottom circuit board component/connector placement is fixed (cannot be moved/altered). The top circuit board model file currently shows 4 LEDs. These LEDs indicate system status for Wi-Fi/Ethernet Network, Smart Meter Connection, Z-Wave Device Connection and Cloud Connection. This configuration may be changed and we expect it to change, multiple colors and/or other arrangements may be used, but we must be able to at least indicate status for these 4 systems. It would be nice to indicate, in addition to blinking status for example, motion or activity in the system.

The design does NOT have to have draft built into the model for the contest, but the designer must be able to add draft (for additional fee) after the prototype has been approved. Think about how this would/could be molded when designing.

The output will be 3D Generic CAD files (i.e. step files) + Native 3D CAD.
Wants:
1. Exterior style, LED/feedback usage, functionality is primary
2. Ease/cost of tooling is important. (We will SLA the prototypes, then tool injection molding in production)
3. Ease of assembly is third (i.e. can the circuit boards be installed, are components mounted to the circuit boards – don’t use wired assemblies for example)
Don't Wants:
It shouldn't look like a bar of soap, nor a simple plastic box.

1. Product has been design considering injection moulding as manufacturing process.
2. Design can be produces by 3D printing very easily.
3. Easy and cost viable tooling has been considering.
4. It is innovative and creative design shape. Aesthetically it will look very nice.

6. Product aesthetic can be managed with various pattern like carbon fiber, chrome, wood, leather etc. by using hydro-graphic printing or TOM lamination process.

A really different approach , slick , less material, can vi divided in to for injection mold, less draft angles requires since there are less 90 degree angles. I hope this is something you are looking for.

The only thing I don't like about the products in the home owner isle of say a Home Depot is that they are all trying to look the same. I kind of like unique when I shop. Hopefully looking the same sells better. Really how would I know, I am only one home owner of many.

I have designed what I feel is not your everyday enclosure. It has a very slick streamlined look and feel where the end uses may think it looks a bit futuristic and fun. I thought about hiding all the connections inside a side bay that would be removed with a simple mechanical button from the side to access the plugs. The layout is only meant for concept and feel. Note I have included funky light tubes to eliminate the units functionality. Please comment I look forward to the conversation. If a technical drawing is required that's not a problem, I happen to operate as a contract product designer draftsman under the name 3DDD the third dimension inc.

Not sure if there is such a thing anymore as an "unique" bluetooth speaker..? Google and Youtube seem to have that covered. What do you think will make your bluetooth speaker stand out from the rest? The one I found that stands out from the rest is worth $3000 USD. Now that's unique!

Hi Artspace. Thank you for the excellent sketch ! Nice drawings skills. I think the electroluminescent or transparent idea is an interesting idea to get feedback to the user. You can look across the room and quickly assess the status based on color. Also, consider other options to get feedback out of the unit such as motion, holes/vents/openings or localized transparent indicators that are flush/recessed. For the overall shape, it's good that you showed where/how the connectors will be presented. Please see the other comments from today for additional details. For inspiration, go to Google, type Modern Design then click images. You'll get a feel for where this will live... I do like the thought process for the shape you started with. Please see if you can use that as a starting point and continue to refine things based on this feedback. Thanks again and good start!

Hi Decker. Thanks for the design concept ! Nice Rendering! I like that you're thinking about streamlining things and prominent visual feedback. We're looking to go for a modern-looking design and this may be a bit too futuristic. Make sure you're thinking something that is durable, in control, and can be trusted. This should be stylish, but isn't going to steal the show. It will be part of your daily life sitting on your bookshelf, or kitchen counter, running 24 hours a day. The design will need to be able to blend into just about any decor and will generally be used by homeowners that are ~30+. I see a lot of the Wi-Fi router folks (i.e. NetGear) go with real angular designs or the nVidia shield type design where they're really trying to convey performance or speed and appeal to gamer types. That's not us. Think about walking down the aisle at Home Depot, glancing at the home automation/control widgets and thinking - wow, that looks interesting??? I can see that in my home, and I get a sense that it must control things, help me save energy, and be trustworthy always doing it’s job. Thank you again and I look forward to continuing to refine things!

Revolutionary Meditation Bench
A standard meditation bench made of wood gets a makeover. We are looking to create a fully-adjustable, lightweight, travel version of a wooden meditation bench for manufacture via injection molding (plastic). Atop is a main sitting piece, which is at right angles to the legs and is 18 inches long and 7 inches deep. All parts are ½ inch thick, or thinner. The bench needs to be able to support the weight of an adult. The main sitting piece (piece “A” in the sketch) needs to be rotational such that it can be tilted forward in order to create an angled seating platform. This adjustment is to conform to the seating angle of the meditator to create comfortable sitting position. The piece must lock out once in place at the desired setting, in order to provide stability while sitting on it (aka it does not move). The legs must also be retractable, such that they fold in towards the main sitting piece in some manner, in order to make the bench small and practical for travelling or storage. When folded, teethe assembly should ideally be no more than 1 inch thick.
