About
Hello, I'm Paul Heaton, a heritage survey and 3D design specialist with over 20 years of experience turning measured information into practical drawings and models for architectural restoration and manufacture.
My particular strength is architectural terracotta: understanding how historic details are measured, reconstructed, divided into individual units and prepared for production. I combine traditional measurement, Artec Leo handheld structured light scanning, point cloud processing and detailed CAD modelling.
I can help with scan-to-CAD work, as-built drawings, replacement terracotta shop drawings and shop tickets, complex ornamental and freeform 3D modelling, STL preparation, bills of quantities and production schedules. My approach brings together careful observation, an understanding of manufacture and clear communication with architects, clients, craftspeople and masonry contractors.
Project experience includes Harrods, the Royal Albert Hall, the Natural History Museum and London Underground locations, alongside work in the USA and Canada. At First Congregational Church of Long Beach, California, I measured and modelled the rose window and supported replacement terracotta work with shop tickets, 3D models and renderings.
My daily software includes AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, Rhino 7, Autodesk Inventor, Fusion 360 and Artec Studio 20. I hold an HNC in Building Studies and a current CSCS card.
Available for remote freelance CAD and 3D modelling projects, up to 20 hours per week alongside my current role at Darwen Terracotta. My direct freelance rate is £40/hour, with project scope, deliverables and any platform charges agreed before work begins.
I am also interested in developing my knowledge of digital sculpting, reverse engineering and drone photogrammetry for heritage facades. I welcome conversations with restoration teams, terracotta and stone manufacturers, architects and contractors looking for thoughtful, practical CAD support.
