Experience

  • MECHANICAL DESIGNER Woodward · Full-time Mar 2014 – Apr 2020 6 yrs 1 mos Fort Collins, CO, United States Mechanical Designer, Large Engine & Industrial Turbine Groups
New Product Development: Designed 3D CAD parts, assemblies, and assembly and test fixtures. Created drawings in accordance with company standards. Established Bills of Materials and initiated Engineering Change Orders.
    • Designed a new Solenoid Valve concept for potential new product. Incorporated novel ideas to meet customer envelope constraints, cost and safety requirements for use in Marine Engines. Reduced part count and improved manufacturability.
    • Conceived a product test fixture design that would accommodate all valve sizes. Eliminated the need for individual fixtures for each valve size. Improved accuracy and added additional test capabilities.
    • Developed a new production Flow-Test fixture to validate performance specifications. Improved test throughput, functionality, interchangeability and safety.
    • Co-developed a new valve actuator incorporating previously unused methods of operation, position feedback and motion transmission. Established a new company “aesthetic” appearance.
    • Introduced new techniques for modeling a new valve casting using advanced surfacing techniques. This allowed for more precise forms to be incorporated into the casting. This also accelerated the fine tuning of geometry for simulation analysis.
  • Senior Mechanical Designer Covidien · Full-time Aug 1998 – Sep 2013 15 yrs 1 mos Boulder, CO, United States Senior Designer, R&D (2000-2013)
Oversaw Product Design and Technical Development of parts, assemblies and test fixtures. Worked with suppliers of various technologies to produce product and prototype parts. Routinely consulted on designs for other product lines.
    • Spearheaded the design of multiple surgical device concept prototypes. Assembled devices and participated in surgeon evaluations. Devices were used in global prototype evaluations and provided valuable data for product development team.
    • Facilitated the development of prototype parts that included working with machine shops and plastic molder to develop components for critical technology development project. Design method that accelerated the number of iterations that could be made quickly for experimentation.
    • Originated industrial design for a flagship, multi-million-dollar electro-surgical device product. Included both plastic part design and the aesthetic design of the device handle bodies and actuation controls.
