Backyard swimming pool lazy river machine, swim systemBlind

in 3D Modeling Design held by Wellness Marketing
Contest Ended, Winner(s) have been selected.
WANTED: Talented industrial designers to help skin a device designed to create a river-like current for backyard pools. This contest is to design the skins/covers only.

The product mounts to existing pool decking (stone, concrete, etc) with four bolts with a bulk of the machine beneath the water-line. The minimum surface area is defined in the attached model, but we're looking for creative variations around the same footprint. Designed to be both a recreational and fitness oriented product, you have a creative license to shape the future of this innovative product.

As a minimum, the 'Top Shroud' must be independently removable from the entire unit. The other skins can separate or be formed into a single body.

Submission File Type: Solidworks, .STP, IGS., IGES., .x_t, .dwg
If adding renderings as a submission, please use examples on page 3 of contest guidelines.

Please ask if other file types are acceptable.

There are samples of similar swim jet units in the attachments.

Links to other styles of swim jets:
Size matters, design variations with a minimalist nature may play well with the judges, e.g. how can the skin more effectively blend this product with it's surroundings. Designs should be in four or less panels as laid out in the attached sample. Design Influence should be of industrial design or organic curves.
Don't Wants:
- One piece designs
- Features that may act as a tripping hazard or protrude onto the deck
- Sharp edges
  1. SolidWorks (2018)
  2. AutoCAD
Additional Information
Material for the skins should be vacuum formable plastic. (i.e. acrylic, abs, etc).

For any renderings, an example of the Stainless Steel Mesh Grill is attached. FYI, the hole pattern for this mesh is not shown in the 3D model.

The Stiffeners in the lower portion around the Mesh Grill can be redesigned if they do not fit into the skins you create. Please account for them in your new design, but it is OK to have them omitted from you entry. Otherwise, feel free to include them if you prefer.

#7 Vacuum Cast covers for River Pool Generator by Decker
I designed a two piece cover that will end up fastening onto the existing structural. There will be a minimum amount of modification to the existing frame design to accommodate mounting. The design is parametric so its easy for the design to modify and adjust as needed. I can develop tool patterns needed for the vacuum caster if needed. Technical drawings can also be supplied as well. For a secondary method of manufacturing I would recommend rotational molding as well. Suggestions for tooling and manufacturing can be supplied.
Good luck, Jamie Decker Designer for CadCrowd Project work

#37 Swim Machine (Organic Wave Design) by Anne Pauley
The inspiration for this design was to incorporate memorable industrial design, organic curves, and wave forms to create a memorable and visually appealing product. This aesthetically pleasing shell allows the swim system to blend fluidly with its surroundings. The organic wave forms and crisp curves will be an effective branding strategy, helping this swim current machine to stand out from the competition and have the appearance of a high quality product.
Shells are currently divided into three sections (as shown), however combining the middle and bottom sections with the top shroud remaining separate would also be an excellent option. The base mesh stiffeners and back wall plate are the same as the original design, while the profile of the deck mounting plate was modified to fit the new shroud. The shells can attach to the back plate and deck mounting plate with either screws or retaining clips.
The attached renders include all individual images from the cover photo.

#43 The Wave - Pool Assembly Design by Raphael Holtermann by Dr.-Ing. Raphael Holtermann
Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,
please find attached my skin proposal "The Wave". I designed the housing as a two-part assembly that uses a dynamic and antisymmetric shape. Open one of the 3D models attached and have a look from different angles - however you look at it, you will always find a flowing, wavy shape, just like flowing water!
In addition to that, the top housing is entirely convex, so there will be no water standing on the top face, which would leave stains after a while of outdoors operation. I split the skin into only two parts with a splitting curve that aligns nicely with the rest of the shape. Furthermore, I also altered the bottom inlet mesh, which I only positioned without designing the new stiffener sub-assembly. If you choose to consider my design submission, I will of course do the necessary detailing such as stiffeners, fasteners and the connecting profiles between the two parts of the skin as well as the outlet profile.
I created the shape using mostly lofted surfaces that are driven by a couple of points that can be altered to fine-tune the skin. So if you like the design and would like to alter certain regions, that's not a problem, either.
Apart from the model in solidworks2016 format, please also find attached an IGS and STEP version as well as a handful of screenshots. If you have any questions or feedback, please don't hesitate to contact me.
Kind regards,
Raphael Holtermann

Feel free to make a design using other production methods. It will be judged equally. We are not limited to vacuum forming, however, we have a supply channels in place for other products that use this process.
Mon, 02 Jul 2018 17:51:53 +0000
I have another question. You've stated that you will vacuum form the outer skins. Are you also open to eventually injection mouldings or other production methods? Because these production methods will restrict the design some what.

To all designers;
The Stiffeners in the lower portion around the Mesh Grill can be redesigned if they do not fit into the skins you create. Please account for them in your new design, but it is OK to have them omitted from you entry. Otherwise, feel free to include them if you prefer.
Mon, 02 Jul 2018 12:06:46 +0000
Darren, I'm not sure what you are asking for. We are looking for input on the outer skin portion of this design only. There is a solid body within the CAD files called 'Internal Body', this defines the component boundaries to be covered.

Hello Wellness Marketing,
May I ask if you could upload the Engineering CAD data of the current product? It would help greatly when constructing the design outer shell.
Fri, 29 Jun 2018 19:55:43 +0000
Great question. Hidden fasteners to attach one skin to one another is not required. However, solutions that hide fasteners could be better received by the judges.

A common solution is using sheet metal screws by drilling a pilot hole or with a retaining clip. The skins will be 5-axis machined after forming, so holes could be located in most locations. In the case where a support is located behind the skin, the skin could have a clearance hole and then a pilot hole can be drilled into the thicker support piece during assembly or in earlier in the manufacturing process on a CNC router (assuming the hole is not drilled into the thickness of the material).

In the sample models, any piece that has a thickness of .1875", .375" or .500" will be plastic material and machined in-house on a CNC router.

Another solution skin to skin could use a threaded retaining clip that could be used with sheet metal screws or machined threads. Here is a link to a possible retaining clip.

Hi wellness marketing
This is a very intresting contest .
I have some questions.
What about the type of assembly between the skin parts
What are the possibilities of use (srews,clips,slides...).
Thank you
Best regards
Fri, 29 Jun 2018 16:35:03 +0000
Thank you for asking Flaviano. The intent right now is make those 1/2" thick pieces out of a plastic material. (most likely PVC, ABS, acrylic, etc.) If you'd like to submit a design with the backboard as stainless sheetmetal, that is ok, but that is not what we are pursuing at this time. There will need to be some features added to increase the rigidity if you go with light gauge mat'l.

Hello Markus Hook,
I have a question to ask:
In your preliminary assembly I see the "Mounting plate assembly" part.
It would seem to be made of stainless steel with a 1/2 "thickness, and therefore weighs approx
63 kg - 138 Lb.
Is it really necessary that it be so massive, could it not be thinner and bended with less weight?
Thanks for an answer.

Enclosure design for a building automation product
Our company is looking for enclosure designs for a set of 3 PCB modules which can connect together to form one single product. Our chosen manufacturer uses folded plastic sheet, although design ideas do not need to be limited to this process. The main board can feature as a standalone product but in many cases will be connected with the HV and I/O submodule boards, in which case they need to form a single product. There should be a lock-in mechanism on the side panels of the main enclosure to allow connection with HV board and I/O board. The Main board will have an LED panel illuminating the company logo (which will change colours based on the product status). Each individual enclosure should be DIN rail mountable. The top and bottom inputs and outputs modules on each board should be exposed so that appropriate connections can be made without opening the box. The way the three modules assemble together into one product should be similar to this: Beyond the technical specifications we are looking for a fresh design to take away the feel of an industrial product and make this looks more like a consumer product. We are looking for something sleek and fresh with the look and feel of a quality product.
Open Air Photo Booth
To design an "open-air" photo booth that is modern and clean in appearance as well as minimal and compact in function. The design can either be modular or as one piece but absolutely must be light weight, very durable and very portable. In terms of appearance, think apple products such as the ipad, imac, etc. If the design is modular, there will need to be cases designed to go along with the pieces or the modules must fit in commonly available cases. In terms of materials, I am open to any and everything but again, they most be light, strong, durable, not show a lot of wear and not too expensive to work with. Wants: All designs must incorporate these necessary components: - A Ring Flash (10" diameter, 9.5" depth, weighs aprx. 5lbs) Photo attached - A DyeSub Printer (10.7" W, 6.6" H, 13.3" D, weight 24 lbs.) Photo attached - An Ipad or touchscreen monitor of similar size - A secondary monitor any size from 10"-19" - A Mac Mini (7.7" W, 1.4" H, 7.7" D, 2.7 llbs) - A second ipad For the camera element / user interface, the ring flash and one ipad/touchscreen monitor must be facing the customer and combined into one module/unit. (The actual DSLR camera mounts to the ring flash with the lens sitting in the center of the ring flash.) This unit would also house the Mac mini and possibly the secondary monitor. The mac mini should be hidden from view. The secondary monitor can be on the side or back of the camera module but in full view to the customer. The lens of the camera will need to sit at 43" from the ground (at it's lowest setting) and be able to be raised to 53" and 58" off the ground (at its highest setting.) This can be an adjustable height mechanism that allows for any height desired in between those specs or by using 2-3 different length adjustments that can be interchanged. It must be on a stable design that will not easily be tipped over. There will need to be a hidden door/access in order to power on the internal components, adjust camera settings, etc. For the printer, it can be housed in the same unit as the camera but if you decide to go this route, the entire unit must be as small and light weight as possible. Otherwise, if you go the modular route, it can be in it's own module or combined with the secondary ipad into it's own module. The printer must be at least 22" off of the ground when being used. The printer is the most delicate of all components so where ever it's placed, it absolutely must be secured and safe from being knocked over. It also must be easily accessed from the front since it has a sliding drawer that opens when the paper and ink are changed. The printer has to be physically tethered via usb cable to the mac mini, so keep that in mind. The secondary ipad's purpose is for customers to be able to use and interact with it. It will need to be at a comfortable height for the average adult user. It can be paired with the printer or if with the camera, the camera module must be 100% stable and able to take the abuse from customers using the ipad without affecting the front components. With all of these components, they need to look seamless. No hinges or screws or other hardware or cables visible. Ideally the entire set up would be primarily white with accents of red and/or aluminum. Very clean, very modern, very simple. It's imperative that the design can withstand countless drunk customers, be very stable, not get damaged or scratched (beyond repair) and all break-down/packed up to easily fit into the trunk/boot of a mid-sized car. It can pack down to one easily transportable case or 3 modules maximum. If one, it must be easy and secure to move, ideally with wheels. These components will be set up in all sorts of different locations from private residences, ballrooms, lobbies, back yards, etc. hence the reason it needs to be light weight, compact and durable as well as adjustable. I have attached a pdf showcasing several different versions of "open-air" photo booths to give you some ideas of what's being done and how much of it could be improved upon.
