Description:
WANTED: Talented industrial designers to help skin a device designed to create a river-like current for backyard pools. This contest is to design the skins/covers only. The product mounts to existing pool decking (stone, concrete, etc) with four bolts with a bulk of the machine beneath the water-line. The minimum surface area is defined in the attached model, but we're looking for creative variations around the same footprint. Designed to be both a recreational and fitness oriented product, you have a creative license to shape the future of this innovative product.
As a minimum, the 'Top Shroud' must be independently removable from the entire unit. The other skins can separate or be formed into a single body.
Submission File Type: Solidworks, .STP, IGS., IGES., .x_t, .dwg
If adding renderings as a submission, please use examples on page 3 of contest guidelines.
Please ask if other file types are acceptable.
There are samples of similar swim jet units in the attachments.

Wants:
Size matters, design variations with a minimalist nature may play well with the judges, e.g. how can the skin more effectively blend this product with it's surroundings. Designs should be in four or less panels as laid out in the attached sample. Design Influence should be of industrial design or organic curves.
Don't Wants:
- One piece designs- Features that may act as a tripping hazard or protrude onto the deck
- Sharp edges
Software:
- SolidWorks (2018)
- AutoCAD
Additional Information
Material for the skins should be vacuum formable plastic. (i.e. acrylic, abs, etc). For any renderings, an example of the Stainless Steel Mesh Grill is attached. FYI, the hole pattern for this mesh is not shown in the 3D model.
The Stiffeners in the lower portion around the Mesh Grill can be redesigned if they do not fit into the skins you create. Please account for them in your new design, but it is OK to have them omitted from you entry. Otherwise, feel free to include them if you prefer.

Darren,
Feel free to make a design using other production methods. It will be judged equally. We are not limited to vacuum forming, however, we have a supply channels in place for other products that use this process.

I have another question. You've stated that you will vacuum form the outer skins. Are you also open to eventually injection mouldings or other production methods? Because these production methods will restrict the design some what.
To all designers;
The Stiffeners in the lower portion around the Mesh Grill can be redesigned if they do not fit into the skins you create. Please account for them in your new design, but it is OK to have them omitted from you entry. Otherwise, feel free to include them if you prefer.

Darren, I'm not sure what you are asking for. We are looking for input on the outer skin portion of this design only. There is a solid body within the CAD files called 'Internal Body', this defines the component boundaries to be covered.
Hello Wellness Marketing,
May I ask if you could upload the Engineering CAD data of the current product? It would help greatly when constructing the design outer shell.

Great question. Hidden fasteners to attach one skin to one another is not required. However, solutions that hide fasteners could be better received by the judges.
A common solution is using sheet metal screws by drilling a pilot hole or with a retaining clip. The skins will be 5-axis machined after forming, so holes could be located in most locations. In the case where a support is located behind the skin, the skin could have a clearance hole and then a pilot hole can be drilled into the thicker support piece during assembly or in earlier in the manufacturing process on a CNC router (assuming the hole is not drilled into the thickness of the material).
In the sample models, any piece that has a thickness of .1875", .375" or .500" will be plastic material and machined in-house on a CNC router.
Another solution skin to skin could use a threaded retaining clip that could be used with sheet metal screws or machined threads. Here is a link to a possible retaining clip. http://fastening.araymond-industrial.com/catalog/metal-snap-on-nuts-for-st-screw-with-retaining-tab-p6-o4016.htm

Hi wellness marketing
This is a very intresting contest .
I have some questions.
What about the type of assembly between the skin parts
What are the possibilities of use (srews,clips,slides...).
Thank you
Best regards

Thank you for asking Flaviano. The intent right now is make those 1/2" thick pieces out of a plastic material. (most likely PVC, ABS, acrylic, etc.) If you'd like to submit a design with the backboard as stainless sheetmetal, that is ok, but that is not what we are pursuing at this time. There will need to be some features added to increase the rigidity if you go with light gauge mat'l.
Hello Markus Hook,
I have a question to ask:
In your preliminary assembly I see the "Mounting plate assembly" part.
It would seem to be made of stainless steel with a 1/2 "thickness, and therefore weighs approx
63 kg - 138 Lb.
Is it really necessary that it be so massive, could it not be thinner and bended with less weight?
Thanks for an answer.
Regards.

Help us design our sustainable barbecue!
Hi Cad Crowders!
We would like to ask you for your help to bring our sustainable barbecue concept to a reality. We believe that we can develop a barbecue that has a lower environmental footprint, on which you can cook great food and that is appealing to clients in the western market.
Our design is based on a simple principle, that is widely used in African villages: the Rocket Stove (see: https://www.aidafrica.net/rocket_stoves/). Rocket Stoves use a third of the fuel provided, emet up to 75% less smoke compared to open firesand therefore, they are a great alternative to the polluting barbecue.
The rocket stove is not so common in the western world, as they often look cheap, simple and don't have the same aura as a Green Egg or Ofyr. We want to change that and develop a product that serves the higher end of the market. A purchase of this barbecue will not only bring you a great product, but you will also support the African community to cook cleaner and safer.
Currently, we already have a vision of what the barbecue should look like, but we need to bring our idea's to 3D models that we can use to 1) promote our product among investors and 2) eventually bring to production.
At this moment, we want to focus on the first, a model that we can use to promote our product among investors. In the attached file, you can find our design guidelines, sketches and a moodboard. We want to ask you to use this guide to design a product that has the perfect look and feel.
You are pretty free in your design; we haven't decided on the materials we'll use & we have idea's on the shape, but nothing is final.
We do want to ensure that the rocket-stove principle is visible in an attractive way, we prefer recycled materials (for example, cast steel) and want something with a "luxury feel" to address our target clients.
After the design contest, we want to validate our concept and bring the barbecue to production!

Enclosure design for a building automation product
Our company is looking for enclosure designs for a set of 3 PCB modules which can connect together to form one single product. Our chosen manufacturer uses folded plastic sheet, although design ideas do not need to be limited to this process.
The main board can feature as a standalone product but in many cases will be connected with the HV and I/O submodule boards, in which case they need to form a single product. There should be a lock-in mechanism on the side panels of the main enclosure to allow connection with HV board and I/O board. The Main board will have an LED panel illuminating the company logo (which will change colours based on the product status). Each individual enclosure should be DIN rail mountable. The top and bottom inputs and outputs modules on each board should be exposed so that appropriate connections can be made without opening the box. The way the three modules assemble together into one product should be similar to this:
http://sie.ag/1E7emGo
Beyond the technical specifications we are looking for a fresh design to take away the feel of an industrial product and make this looks more like a consumer product. We are looking for something sleek and fresh with the look and feel of a quality product.
