I am a Principle Mechanical Design Engineer based in Minneapolis, MN. I have over 25 years of product design experience and can make your ideas come to life in 3D. I own and operate a mechanical design services business. I have 11 US Patents My hourly rate may be a bit higher, but you get what you pay for! Your design is not a place to be cheap. I have been using Solidworks doing intensive design projects since 1997, and used other CAD systems for many years before that (in fact I started with a pencil and a drafting board). I am likely faster and more experienced than most, and can steer your design in the right direction so the parts are manufacturable and as inexpensive as possible.

I am a creative and self-motivated mechanical engineer who is passionate about design and particularly interested in design for manufacturing. In addition to a strong mechanical design foundation, I possess strong problem-solving and communication skills. I graduated from UPenn with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics in May 2020. While there, I gained tons of CAD, CAM, DFM, & DFA experience (engineers love acronyms, don't they). I have tons of manufacturing experience in addition to my design experience which means that I will save you time and money by creating a manufacturable design in the first place. I have a firm background with ANSI Y14.5 2009. My name is Nathan Dotts, and I am a Mechanical Engineer. I graduated from Brigham Young University Idaho and currently live in Indiana with my wife and two sons. I have industry experience in food, automotive, automation, and fabrication. My specialty is in the area of product design. I even started my own business, Mechanical Design and Fabrication (https://mechanicaldesignandfabrication.com), to help facilitate the process. We help others to design and fabricate their products. When desired, we can also help others to patent their design. Because of my business and previous experience, I have access to equipment such as machinery and software that aids in the engineering process. If you want something built, I can keep cost and time spent waiting on the lower end because I have the ability to do most everything in-house, all except the heaviest of fabrication processes. I am a passionate and driven engineer specializing in optical and mechanical systems, with a strong background in research, design, and innovation. In October of 2024 I founded Apereon Imaging, a startup dedicated to advancing photography using innovative optical design. I hold a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering and Astronomy from the University of Maryland and recently completed my Master's degree in Design Engineering at the Universitat Politècnica de València. Professional Experience: From May 2020 to May 2021, I contributed to groundbreaking work at the MIT Haystack Observatory for the Mars Oxygen ISRU Experiment (MOXIE), a payload on NASA's 2020 Mars Rover Perseverance. My focus was on developing fluid dynamic models of the MOXIE filter, culminating in a first-author presentation at the International Conference on Environmental Systems in 2021. In the summer of 2021, I interned remotely with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where I developed a thermal model of the MOXIE inlet tube using Thermal Desktop integrated with AutoCAD. These roles honed my ability to collaborate across global teams, as well as to work independently and effectively in remote environments. In summer 2023, I worked as an Optomechanical Design Engineer at Mettler Toledo Autochem in Columbia, Maryland, where I further expanded my expertise in optomechanical design and engineering.
