The Beach FloorBlind

in Product Design held by Mark G
Contest Ended, Winner(s) have been selected.
Problem - Going to the beach and trying to eat and fix lunches or snacks without getting sand in your food and drinks is a never ending challenge for beachgoers. And when you put kids in the mix, it doubles and triples your chances of a sand-filled experience. There are currently no products on the market today that mimic a solid foundation.
* Either you are dragging a fold up table or laying down a towel or trying to do it all on top of your cooler lid.
* You cannot sit your chairs on your towels or a tarp as they end up pushing sand onto the towel/tarp and or tearing them.

Solution - A foldable hard surface that can be carried by one person
*Would need to fit to a standard 10x10 pop up tent and include some type of loops or straps for connecting to the legs (If a tent is larger, that is fine as the weight should keep it from blowing away. Or, could include 4 stakes)

*Would want a way that it unfolds to have a whole in the center that would be large enough to allow for a Beach Umbrella Anchor to fit through it. (Example: .

*By doing this, you allow for a customer to use it either with an umbrella, a tent or with no shade cover.

*Should include a nice bag carrying cover with handles.

Material considerations:
* This should be made of a hard plastic like material. Metal will be too heavy and cloth-like material found on tumbling mats will potentially tear unless we could source something that has proven durability and will not cave with weight.

*The material should be considered for printing of logos or branding (Sports teams, Company logos/names, etc.)
Evaluation Criteria:
We will consider a winning design based on achieving the goals of solving the basic problem as stated above.

We will look for designs that add any new ideas that improve on the experience for the consumer.

We will look for the design to be clean and simple to assemble with minimal steps.

Anything that has a complex process for a consumer beyond four steps will not be considered.

Consideration for costs to mass produce will be a factor, but will be more of a bonus vs the other criteria stated above.

The winner of the design project will be selected for follow on work such as 3D animation for marketing, actual CAD specific documents for manufacturing, etc.
Don't Wants:
I don't need full scale CAD drawings for commercial use yet. If you want to, you can, but looking for design concepts at this point for use in Proof of Concept with consumers. Winner will be given the follow on work to design the final materials.

#6 High Density foam beach floor by Dan Bright
My design uses interlocking high density foam mats to establish a rigid surface. Users need only to level the surface below the mat and interlock the pieces. These mats are already being produced for other uses but not the beach setting. With a little re branding and minor modification of holes for umbrellas and stakes, This design is light weight and infinitely expandable.

#18 beach floor with umbrella stand by kunal asawara593
its a beach floor made by plastic and the lower side is made by rubber the dimensions of the floor, handle, stand and all the other parts is not practical they are only used for a reference you can change it according to the requirement so I mainly focused on the design part
there is an umbrella stand at the center of this floor
the floor can be foldable into 1/4 of its total area so it can be easily Convertable and there is also some area for loops or straps I didn't add loops or straps into it because it is not possible to make anything like loops or straps in Solidworks so it can be easily added I left some space for it

#29 Beach Floor Assembly by Kevin Chamberlain
My design comprises of only four parts that can be easily assembled on the beach. These four parts can be packed away into a carry bag that is less than 20mm thick. The size, shape, design features and color of the product can easily be finalised before production takes place by making simple changes to the design drawings.
The size of my product is 1200 x 1200mm.

#16 Beach Floor by DABShepherd
Good Day
My design in a very simple fold out table that can be scales to suit any side required for production via injection molding. The table can ether be unfolded completely to create a suitable table for preparing food or drink without the risk of getting sand in everything or if you simply keep the legs folded, the surface can be used to place a chair or blanket onto.
The design can very easily be adjusted to have a hole in the middle for an umbrella stand to be placed into. If you are interested in having something to weigh down the table, it is possible to ass small "sand bags" to the bottom of the legs which will then have a zip at the bottom in order to easily release the sand when you want to leave.
The hinges I have made larger on this concept in order to show how the connections will be made, in reality the hinges will be much smaller, making the design light and easy to fold and pack into the accompanying sleeve.
Injection molding is an affordable production process as well as the plastic being light for any person to be able to carry it onto the beach with ease.
Thank you for this opportunity.

#5 beach floor with collapsable hinges. by Abid Yusuf
Hi, So this is a raw concept that I wanted to put in front of you. I would request a feedback from your side in regard to the direction I have taken towards the design of the beach floor. If you think that my concept is up to the mark then I can carry out the detailing and provide rendered images with more beach accessories. One thing more, what king of tent are you looking towards? A canopy tent or the ones which you nail down in the sand or do you want to incorporate a universal solution. Thank You, I will start working further as soon as I get your feedback.

Bruno, I am a bit confused on the PDF. It looks like several parts, but then the description says it would be one piece rolled up. Can you help me better understand this last revision?<img src="/showimage.php?cid=2277&num=23&img=small.jpg" alt="">

@rednom, I appreciate your feedback. But we have 18 designs that have been provided with great designs based off the direction in the scope. The focus is the floor. and of course sand will blow into things. It is a beach. This is about having something at the next level vs. a bunch of beach towels strung together. Thanks and you are welcome to submit your design for consideration.

*Sand into food
Sat, 25 Jan 2020 21:12:45 +0000
I have a question regarding the practicality of this hard surface. You say the purpose of it is to prevent sand from entering food and drinks. How does a hard surface prevent sand from entering food? Even with a hard surface, the wind still blows food into your food. You might say a tent solves the wind issue. But then, a tent by itself with a mat would do the trick. Please make the objective more clear. It makes more sense to design food and drink containers which prevent sand from entering (when open) as per your problem description. Or, if you are fixated on the hard surface design, it would make more sense to change the problem you are tackling (say, a stable area for a family picnic at the beach)

@coldmonk, per the description, yes, it needs to be hard enough for someone to sit on it, put a potential chair or cooler on it and yes it needs to be able to fit a 10x10 beach tent with poles over it and somehow strap or be secured. so, maybe notched corners with straps or something like that.

Hey CH, so you want a hard, durable, portable floor, right? If so then how big, 10'*10' of some other dimension would do.

Re-Design Pool Pump Housing
We are looking to make the outside of our pool pump more aesthetically pleasing by adding our logo, color and design elements to the outside pump housing. We could go with a more rounded look to the pump vs. the straight line look. We do need to use the same lid which is used on our current design so the area where the lid attaches needs to be unchanged, the same will go for the area where the motor attaches to the pump housing. Integrate our Logo and Orange and Blue Colors into housing.
Lipstick & Liquid Lipstick 3D Product Design Contest
My team and I are currently in the process of developing a luxury cosmetic brand and we need 3D content designs for our manufacturers to refer to for the molding of the components. We need a design for our lipstick as well as our liquid lip stick (similar to lip gloss). Again, the product will be high-end luxury; so the design should emulate that. The colors should consist of chrome/metallic/silver, black and or white. The design should be sleek and thin. Although we prefer classic silhouettes, you can attempt to subtly incorporate geometric shapes, along the lines of a diamond. Don't be afraid to have fun with it, but don't have to much fun! You can look to the presentation and other attachments for inspiration and direction. If you guys have any questions don't hesitate to ask!
Wooden 3d printer
I want to build a 3d printing machine out of 1/4” plywood and wooden dowels. To win the prize, I need a 3d rendering, a explosion picture of the system and a dxf or dwg file showing all the parts laid out for cutting by a cnc machine. The goal is to Repstrap a 3d printer similar to the Wally. The first thing to do is review the Wally blog at,220993 The next thing to review is the git hub site. This has all the files for dimensions and parts needed This will be the starting point, nothing is set in stone, If you need things to be bigger or smaller, that is ok. 1. I have included a variety of pictures and ideas. Use them as you wish. 2. I see the arms built out of 3 layers of plywood. Bearing on top, bearing on bottom and the middle piece has a smaller diameter hole to keep bearings from falling through. Ply wood dowels should be used for indexing assembly. 3. Bearings are being used for both smooth motion and rigidity. 4. The frame and table should be tabbed so that the parts push together and self align. 5. The back is to be 2 layers. For a total of 1/2”. The back should be inset a 1/4” to allow for a future modification. 6. All parts that can ( brackets) should be tabbed to self align and position. 7. I would like to be able to flip one of the arms and have it line up with the other arm. This is for a future change to add a central carrier. (like in the original design) 8. Shaft connections to motors need to be figured out 9. To tighten the fishing line, I will be using guitat pegs. There needs to be a hole for a dowel to lock in position. 10. I would like to get all the pieces on the front side of the printer. If dimensions need to be made to frame, that is fine. 11. Bed will be multiple layers. There should be a bottom, a ring to open center to 1/2” (for a heated bed) and a pice of glass will sit on top of this. 12. Pulley to arm attachment. I have a couple of ides on this. One is to use a dowel into a bearing another is to tighten the bolt and then have a plywood key that fits around outside of bolt and keys into pulley or arm. 13. The bearings are cheap. If an extra bearing makes something easier, use it. 14. File will be cut using an 1/8th inch bit. Adjust slots for this. (ie. Add a 1/16th of an inch to each side I am sure there will be lots of questions. I will answer them as they come up. I will also send a kit (plywood and bearings) to the winner.

Breathing aid for saxophone
I have an Idea for a product which teaches beginning students to correctly insert the sax mouthpiece while playing and maintain proper breathing technique. The basis for this device is an incentive spirometer, which is already often used by wind instrument players. This company has the same concept as me. I would like to take that concept and put it in a more compact and aesthetically pleasing device. The device will be made of hard plastic. Anything instrument related incorporated into the desighn will be nice. I will provide pictures of my BASIC desighn idea. I would like for the desighner to play around with the shape and form. But the elevated angle where the mouthpiece is inserted MUST be incorporated to allow the user to be able to blow and also view the ball. Also, the tiny built in ledge on the top front of the mouthpiece must also be incorporated as it will force the student to put the correct amount of mouthpiece in his or her mouth.
