And in addition to the permit application itself, the submission typically includes a project description, the contractor license numbers, proof of authorization from the homeowner (because the contractor handles the permit application in most cases), and electrical blueprints along with the engineering calculations. Permit applications take time, as they should, because the building department has to thoroughly review the application, especially the electrical plan section, and ensure nothing violates code.

It’s not supposed to be quick, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing you can do to make the process run as swiftly as possible. The main focus is on the electrical draft, so the sensible thing to do here is to provide the CAD version (as opposed to a hand-drawn plan) as it’s more readable, consistent in terms of symbols and legends, and with better layout. Will electrical CAD drafting guarantee approval? It won’t, even if you get everything right, and there’s no local building violation or such. That being said, you have better chances of getting quick approval if the city engineers work with a clearly presented, professionally drawn electrical draft.
