About
My name is Allen Macdonald, and I’m the founder of 3D Precision Works. My work is driven by accuracy, clarity, and practical experience gained across drafting, engineering support, and construction environments.
I started using AutoCAD in high school, where I developed a strong foundation in technical drafting and spatial problem-solving. After graduating, I joined the U.S. Army and served for five years. That experience instilled discipline, attention to detail, and a results-driven mindset that continues to influence how I approach every project.
After my military service, I attended community college and earned certification in industrial drawing, strengthening my technical skill set and understanding of fabrication and construction requirements. I then spent eight years working for a large farming company in California within the engineering department, where I supported industrial and agricultural operations through detailed drawings, layouts, and coordinated design solutions. This role gave me extensive experience working alongside engineers, translating concepts into accurate, buildable documentation.
I later relocated to Montana and worked for a small lighting design company for a year and a half. There, I produced fabrication-ready drawings and collaborated closely with designers, installers, and clients to ensure designs were accurately executed in the field.
Most recently, I transitioned into the construction industry as a BIM Coordinator, focusing on model coordination, clash detection, and constructible documentation. I work directly with project teams to ensure models are accurate, coordinated, and ready for construction—bridging the gap between design intent and field installation.
3D Precision Works was created to deliver dependable drafting, 3D modeling, and BIM coordination services rooted in real-world engineering and construction experience. Every drawing and model I produce is built with precision, clarity, and the end user in mind.
Thank you.

A VDC Coordinator is responsible for using 3D modeling, BIM technology, and digital construction workflows to coordinate building systems throughout the design and construction process. The role focuses on improving constructability, identifying conflicts before installation, and ensuring project teams have accurate and coordinated models and drawings for field execution.
Works closely with project managers, engineers, architects, subcontractors, fabrication teams, and field personnel to develop and maintain coordinated 3D models. Reviews architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and other trade models to identify clashes, resolve coordination issues, and support efficient construction planning.
Key responsibilities include:
Develop, manage, and maintain accurate 3D BIM/VDC models throughout the project lifecycle.
Coordinate architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and specialty trade systems.
Perform clash detection and constructability reviews to identify conflicts before field installation.
Lead or participate in VDC/BIM coordination meetings with engineers, contractors, subcontractors, and project teams.
Create coordinated drawings, layouts, sections, details, and installation documentation from 3D models.
Review contract drawings, specifications, submittals, and design documents to ensure models reflect current project requirements.
Track coordination issues and work with project teams to develop practical solutions.
Incorporate design changes, RFIs, field conditions, and approved revisions into project models.
Establish and maintain model organization, file standards, naming conventions, and revision control.
Support field teams with layout information, dimensions, model-based coordination, and installation planning.
Assist with fabrication modeling, prefabrication planning, equipment coordination, and construction sequencing.
Maintain coordinated models for use during construction and assist with the development of as-built/record models.
Utilize software such as Autodesk Revit, Navisworks, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and other BIM/VDC platforms to support project coordination.
Serve as a communication link between the design, engineering, fabrication, project management, and field teams, helping ensure coordinated information is translated into constructible work.
The overall goal of a VDC Coordinator is to use digital construction technology to reduce conflicts, minimize rework, improve communication, and increase efficiency from design through construction and project completion. -
