ABOUT THE JOB
ATOM STEEL LTD (steel fabrication and erection, North Macedonia, EN 1090-2 EXC3 / EN ISO 3834-2) is looking for an experienced, registered structural engineer to produce an INDEPENDENT STRUCTURAL CALCULATION for a single-storey steel retail park.
Important: the concept already exists. An architectural DWG and a pre-developed structural concept (member sizes, bracing layout, column bases, loads, load combinations, seismic parameters and a preliminary 3D analysis model) will be shared under NDA. We are NOT asking for a redesign, grid optimisation, general-arrangement drawings, a bill of materials or cost work – these are handled in-house. We need a licensed engineer to build an independent model in licensed software, verify the concept, correct it where required, and deliver a calculation report that the client's locally licensed designer can verify and adopt.
PROJECT FACTS
- Single-storey, low-rise retail building, roof area approx. 8,000 m2
- 4 structurally independent blocks (expansion joints)
- Frame spans 11.4 m and 13.1 m, frame spacing 8.0 m, eaves height approx. 5.1 m (rafter axis above finished floor)
- Hot-rolled sections (HEA / IPE), columns pinned at the top, stability by roof and vertical bracing, fixed (semi-rigid) column bases on the front elevation, cold-formed Z purlins
- Design codes: Eurocodes with the National Annexes of North Macedonia (EN 1990, EN 1991, EN 1993, EN 1998); seismic design required (current design basis: EN 1998-1, a...

- Design codes: Eurocodes with the National Annexes of North Macedonia (EN 1990, EN 1991, EN 1993, EN 1998); seismic design required (current design basis: EN 1998-1, a_g = 0.25 g, DCL, q = 1.5)
- Fabrication to EN 1090-2, bolted site connections
SCOPE OF WORK
1. Review of the provided design basis (loads, combinations, seismic and thermal parameters): confirmation or documented correction
2. Independent 3D analysis model per block, built from the provided geometry in licensed software (Dlubal RFEM 6, Radimpex Tower, SAP2000, Robot, SCIA or equivalent – state version and licence)
3. Global analysis per block: linear static, modal and response-spectrum analysis (EN 1998-1), stability (alpha_cr, imperfections, second-order effects where required), thermal actions on the long blocks
4. Member verification to EN 1993-1-1 (cross-section, flexural and lateral-torsional buckling) for rafters, columns, eaves beams, bracing members and purlins (EN 1993-1-3 or supplier load tables with references)
5. Serviceability: vertical deflections and horizontal displacements; seismic drift (damage limitation requirement)
6. Principal connections and column bases: rafter-to-column, apex, bracing gussets, base plates and anchor bolts (EN 1993-1-8, EN 1992-4) – typical sketches are sufficient, shop drawings are not required
7. Support reactions per base and per combination (characteristic and design values) for the foundation designer
8. Where the concept does not pass, propose the minimum change and document it. Improvement proposals are welcome; a redesign of the concept is not requested
Not included: foundation design, architecture, cladding and facade, shop drawings and detailing, cost estimates, permit submission (done by the client's licensed designer).
REQUIRED DELIVERABLES (English, SI units, Eurocode notation)
1. Design basis document (PDF)
2. Native analysis model file plus input echo (geometry, sections, supports, releases, loads, combinations)
3. Structural calculation report (PDF): legible result diagrams (deformations, N/V/M, mode shapes), utilisation tables for all members, connection and base-plate checks, drift and deflection checks
4. Member schedule per block
5. Support reactions table (Excel)
6. Discrepancy and change list versus the provided concept, with reasons
7. One revision cycle after the comments of the verifying designer
The report is to be signed where the applicant's registration permits. The calculation will be reviewed and adopted by the client's locally licensed designer for the building permit in North Macedonia; registration in the applicant's own jurisdiction is sufficient.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Degree in civil / structural engineering; registered, chartered or licensed structural engineer in your jurisdiction (registration body and number will be verified)
- 8+ years in steel structure design, with references for single-storey steel halls or comparable braced / portal-frame buildings
- Hands-on Eurocode steel design (EN 1993-1-1, -1-3, -1-8) and seismic design (EN 1998-1); experience with National Annexes of South-East Europe is an advantage
- Licensed structural software with modal and response-spectrum analysis; the native model file is part of the deliverables
- Fabrication-oriented engineering judgement (EN 1090-2, bolted site connections, transport and erection units)
- Professional English; Serbian, Croatian or Macedonian is a plus
- Capacity to start within 1–2 weeks and to keep the schedule below
SCHEDULE AND MILESTONES (fixed price per milestone, escrow via Cadcrowd)
- M1, within 1 week of receiving the input package: design basis reviewed, independent model built, geometry and load reconciliation note – 30 %
- M2, within 3 weeks: complete calculation report, member schedule, reactions, connections and base plates – 50 %
- M3, after the verifying designer's comments: one revision cycle and final issue – 20 %
If your realistic schedule differs, please say so in your application. Additional revision cycles or scope changes are paid at the quoted hourly rate, agreed in advance.
CONFIDENTIALITY AND IP
- NDA before release of the input package; the client's identity and site data are confidential
- Input package: architectural DWG, structural concept (member schedule, bracing layout, base concept), design basis, 3D geometry (IFC / DXF / JSON), preliminary analysis model export, list of open assumptions to be confirmed
- All deliverables, including native models, become the property of ATOM STEEL LTD; no portfolio or publication use without written consent
HOW TO APPLY (applications without these items will not be considered)
1. CV with registration / licence details (body and number)
2. Two or three comparable reference projects (steel halls, seismic design) and one sample calculation report (redacted is fine)
3. Software, version and licence type you will use
4. Fixed fee per milestone (M1 / M2 / M3), estimated hours, hourly rate for additional work
5. Earliest start date and delivery date per milestone
6. Maximum 10 lines on how you would approach verifying a pre-developed concept – no generic cover letters
Questions are welcome via Cadcrowd messaging.
