About the job
We are looking for a highly skilled mechanical drafter/fixture engineer to serve as the bridge between conceptual design and our fabrication floor. We, Phoenix Day, are a custom lighting manufacturer specializing in high-end chandeliers, sconces, and table lamps, alongside dedicated repair and restoration services.
Core Responsibilities
⚬ Generate Shop-Ready Packages: Create comprehensive 2D manufacturing drawings, exploded assembly views, and precise BOMs for the shop floor.
⚬ Mechanical Detailing: Specify tolerances, threading, bend deductions, and hardware callouts for custom lighting fixtures.
⚬ Material Integration: Detail designs specifically for non-ferrous metals—primarily brass and aluminum.
⚬ Fabrication Alignment: Design for specific in-house shop capabilities, including manual lathes/mills, traditional silver soldering, and assembly.
⚬ Electrical Integration: Seamlessly integrate modern illumination elements (COB LED tape, flexible acrylic diffusers, low-voltage drivers) while ensuring thermal management and structural integrity.
⚬ Compliance: Ensure mechanical designs meet UL 1598 / UL 8750 standards and accommodate standard wiring and strain relief requirements.
The Ideal Candidate
⚬ Fixture Design, Not Architectural: You design the hardware, not the room layout. You understand the physical realities of metal fabrication and luminaire assembly.
⚬ Software Proficiency: Expert in 3D modeling and 2D drafting (SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, or simil...

⚬ Hands-On Mindset: You understand how a machinist reads a drawing and how a builder fits components together. You know how to design for manufacturability.
⚬ Flexibility: We are open to independent contractors and freelance luminaire engineering consultants on a per-project or hourly basis, though full-time arrangements will also be considered for the right local fit.
To Apply
Please send a brief introduction, your resume, and—most importantly—a sample of a completed mechanical shop drawing or fabrication packet you have created for a physical product.
