Senior Mechanical/Product Engineer – Smart Floor Drain Design Review, DFM, Silicone Valve & Prototype Validation

Job Description

We are developing a Smart Floor Drain product and are seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical/Product Design Engineer to perform an independent and critical engineering review of an existing 3D CAD design before proceeding to prototype manufacturing and injection-mold tooling.

The product includes injection-molded plastic components, a removable hair/debris strainer, internal water-flow paths, and a flexible silicone/elastomer valve intended to allow drainage while preventing odor and reverse airflow.

This is not simply a CAD modeling or cosmetic redesign project. We need an engineer who can identify real-world functional, manufacturing, assembly, reliability, and serviceability problems before we invest in tooling.

The existing CAD design will be provided for review.

Scope of Work

The selected engineer will review and evaluate:

1. Water Flow & Drainage Performance

* Review the complete water-flow path.
* Identify restrictions, bottlenecks, dead zones, or areas where water may accumulate.
* Evaluate whether openings and internal geometry could negatively affect drainage performance.

* Identify potential clogging risks from hair, debris, soap residue, etc.
* Recommend geometry improvements where necessary.
* Clearly identify any areas requiring CFD or physical testing rather than making unsupported assumptions.

2. Silicone / Elastomer Valve

* Review the valve geometry and operating principle.
* Evaluate opening behavior under water pressure/head.
* Evaluate sealing after water flow stops.
* Assess reverse airflow and odor-blocking capability.
* Identify risks of sticking, deformation, fatigue, permanent set, leakage, contamination, or loss of sealing performance.
* Review appropriate silicone/elastomer characteristics, including Shore hardness where relevant.
* Recommend design improvements and appropriate validation tests.

3. Hair Strainer / Debris Management

* Evaluate strainer geometry and open area.
* Assess hair/debris capture versus water-flow performance.
* Identify clogging and cleaning issues.
* Evaluate removal, cleaning, and reinstallation by the end user.

4. Injection Molding / DFM
Perform a detailed DFM review of all plastic components, including:

* Wall thickness and uniformity
* Draft angles
* Ribs and bosses
* Undercuts
* Parting-line considerations
* Gate-location considerations
* Ejection considerations
* Sink marks
* Warpage
* Weld lines
* Shrinkage
* Mold complexity
* Tooling risks
* Material recommendations
* Opportunities to simplify the design and reduce tooling/manufacturing cost

5. Assembly & Tolerance Analysis

* Review all mating components.
* Review critical dimensions, fits, clearances, and tolerances.
* Identify tolerance-stack risks.
* Assess assembly sequence and ease of manufacturing.
* Identify components that may become loose, jammed, difficult to assemble, or unreliable in production.
* Recommend practical production tolerances.

6. Serviceability & Reliability
Evaluate:

* Ease of cleaning and maintenance
* Accessibility of internal components
* Valve replacement
* Strainer removal
* Potential accumulation of dirt or residue
* Wear/fatigue points
* Likely real-world failure modes
* Long-term reliability concerns

7. Failure Mode / Risk Assessment
Identify and prioritize potential failure modes, including:

* Poor drainage
* Clogging
* Odor leakage
* Reverse airflow
* Valve sticking
* Valve fatigue/deformation
* Leakage
* Assembly problems
* Manufacturing defects
* User-maintenance problems

Each major issue should preferably be classified by severity/risk and recommended corrective action.

8. Prototype Testing & Validation Plan
Develop a practical prototype testing plan with measurable acceptance criteria, including where applicable:

* Drainage/flow-rate testing
* Low-water-head valve opening
* Odor/reverse-airflow sealing
* Leakage testing
* Hair/debris clogging testing
* Repeated valve-cycle testing
* Cleaning/serviceability testing
* Assembly testing
* Durability testing

Required Deliverables

We expect the final work to include:

1. Detailed engineering review report (PDF)
2. Marked-up CAD/screenshots/drawings showing identified problems
3. Prioritized list of design risks and failure points
4. Specific recommended design modifications
5. DFM and injection-molding assessment
6. Tolerance and assembly recommendations
7. Silicone/elastomer valve assessment
8. Prototype testing plan with measurable acceptance criteria
9. Manufacturing/tooling recommendations
10. Clear GO / MODIFY / NO-GO recommendation before tooling

If design modifications are included in the agreed scope, updated CAD files should be supplied in editable native CAD format plus STEP/STP, with individual parts and the complete assembly.

Required Experience

Please apply only if you have demonstrated professional experience in several of the following areas:

* Mechanical/Product Engineering
* Injection-molded plastic product design
* DFM for mass production
* Silicone/elastomer components or flexible valves/seals
* Tolerance analysis and mechanical assemblies
* Fluid-handling or drainage products
* Prototype development and validation
* Failure analysis / FMEA
* Design for serviceability and reliability

CAD modeling experience alone is not sufficient for this project.

When Applying

Please provide:

* Years of relevant professional engineering experience
* 2–3 examples of similar manufactured products you have worked on
* Specific experience with injection-molded plastic parts
* Specific experience with silicone/elastomer valves, seals, or similar flexible components
* Your experience taking products from CAD → prototype → tooling → mass production
* CAD software you use
* Whether you can perform or interpret CFD analysis, if required
* What exactly you will deliver
* Estimated timeline
* Fixed-price quotation

Please also briefly explain the first 5 engineering checks you would perform when reviewing this Smart Floor Drain design.

Important

We are specifically looking for an engineer who will challenge the existing design and identify problems, not simply confirm that the CAD looks acceptable.

The objective is to discover and correct problems before prototype refinement and especially before expensive production tooling is commissioned.

Potential for continued work: If the engineering review is successful, the selected engineer may continue with design modifications, prototype optimization, manufacturing preparation, tooling review, and production support. read less
