Description:
Our company, GnomeBOT, is working on a garden automation tool and we need a design for the product case. The case will look like a gnome, and willHow did we come up with a gnome?
Think about the home automation tools you've seen. They either look like a 90's router (box with antennas out of the top), or they're sleek modern works of art. Think about the Nest thermostat. What does it look like? Your grandma's thermostat, right? Except much more modern. That's what we're going for: a nod at your grandma's gnome, but modern.
Points of consideration:
> Our device is a gnome, and a computer/robot. We're looking for a modern way to blend the two.
>The gnome will house electronic components including sensors (with external probes which will plug in via ports), a 16x2 LCD, a PCB, and an antenna.
>The final product will be waterproof. Avoid any areas that could pool water.
>The product will go outside in customer's yards. Consider a base or large footprint to keep the unit stable
>There will be plugs for sensors connecting to the gnome. Please plan an area for 5-8 probes to connect.
>Design will need to be printed as 2 halves that come together once the internal components are in place.
Wants:
We'll be evaluating each design based on these criteria:>Design asthetics: Does the gnome look modern, and like it belongs alongside other sleek home automation devices?
>Emotion: Does the gnome's feature, facial expression, pose, apparel, etc. convey modern, happy, wise?
>Dimensions: Would the figurine fit a 4"x2"x7" cavity inside for components?
>Creative LCD placement: Does the design incorporate the LCD in a creative and natural way?
>Usability: Is the design and file something we can continue to tweak and iterate?
>3D printability: Can the design be printed easily?
Don't Wants:
We're not looking for a troll, or a dwarf, or a smurf, or an elf, or Santa.
Software:
- Blender
Additional Information
Gnome should be 10" tall. For your submission, please submit a rendering as a jpeg.
We'll also need an stl and obj file so we can 3D print the gnome.
*****EDIT 7/3/2017********************
Of the designs we've received so far, our favorite look is #42. However, this design does not show how the case would fit together, etc.
Our favorite design files are from #45. This designer has spent time and attention on how the case would fit together, how it would stand, where the screen and plugs would go, etc.
If someone were able to combine the design of #42 with technical details of #45, we'd have a winner!
*****EDIT 7/6/2017********************
Just about 10 hours to go! We've narrowed the results down to what we believe are the top few entries based on our needs.
One quick reminder to all designers that we are looking for a case for an expensive piece of technology. This isn't a toy. We do have a playful marketing piece, but we have to present a device, not a toy.

Hi everyone,
The contest is over, so if you want to talk to each other about the designs, entries etc, I appreciate if you can do that privately or to open a new thread in the forums, that will be visible for everyone.
As you know, each designer who participated to the contest (and the buyer also) receive email notifications when a comment is posted, so is really annoying to receive notifications each day, even the contest ended.
As for showing the winning entries, I'm sure that Pablo and Eira could do that (in the forums or privately), since the contest ended.
Hopefully this will be the last post here, at the contest page. There is no need to reply to my comment, you could send me a message if something is not clear.
Keep up the good work!
Thanks again,
Lucian

Hi Gardener & Pablo,
After congratulations,
In the recommendations and feedback you tell me that you like the beard and the 2nd winner has no beard! .... I would like to see the first winner to do my analysis and synthesis. To remind you I made 20 entries and I worked hard in this project.
Message for siti,: you deserve it (I wanted to clarify the ambiguous choice)
Regards

The contest is over, I do not see the interest of hiding the design now ..
Unless it is the body of Maya the Bee retouched! .... or a known body design ....
Is it true ???

Hey Eira, Would you mind sending a front rendering changing the color to white or gray? The black is hard to see details. Thanks,
Daniel

Hi,

Is it still open?
Adam, REDA, and Pablo--thanks for your comments about materials.
We're 3D printing this first model as a prototype. We'll be iterating on the design many more times before we get to manufacturing.

I will definitely contact the administrator this matter once the Contest is finished.
It kind of feel we are being played.
It kind of feel we are being played.
Either way, let me express one thing:
I really don't feel good about how the client is cannibalizing the concepts trying to make us use things from other concepts into a Frankenstein product. I really feel bad about Zerroug who has though and designed that shape in the first place, and no one would have a clue how to design it if it were for him. For me, this is really unethical.

I have been working on a product that requires 3d design of a skull and butterfly that will be CNC machined, which will require the STEP file format. The skull and butterfly will be housed in a metal and glass bottle. I would also like to have the design for the other component reviewed and recommended changes be made to accommodate the skull.
