Universal plastic side release buckle adapterBlind

TIME REMAINING: 3 days, 6 hours
Description:
Looking for a 3D printing design for a universal buckle adapter that will connect to a variety of existing side release buckles that you might find on backpacks, luggage or pet collars. The universal buckle adapter will connect to the male end on one side and the female end on the other side of the existing buckle. The design will be for a medium sized buckle that attaches to a 1" wide strap.
Wants:
Adapter must be 1.5 inches wide or less; must be a universal adapter (the more buckles it works with the better); the universal adapter has to connect securely regardless of the type of buckle it is connecting.

Design to be 3D. The adapter should not infringe on an existing patent.
Don't Wants:
I'm not looking for an adapter design that replicates a single buckle style. The adapter must be able to connect a variety of medium sized buckles.
Software:
  1. Solid Works CAD or similar
Additional Information
The attached photos include 5 pictures of the various types of buckles the universal adapter must work with. The other two pictures are drawings of the concept of a modular adapter.

Both the male and female buckles utilize the same components except for the slider arms. The disk on the end of the screw is for printing stability and can be snapped off after printing. Expand or close slider by turning with small flat head screw driver. Ratcheting mechanism prevents loosening. Fits approximate width from 1.6-3.1 cm.

Hi Saket -
We are looking for a solution where the device does not hang off the collar or stick out from the collar. It needs to be discreet (not obvious) and secure. The attachment (Collar on Sam) is an example of discreet and secure, but we are open to any designs that accomplish these goals.

Thanks,
Paprika

Hi Paprika
Please elaborate more regarding tracking device.Do you want it to be incorporated in the same adapter we are designing or you want a separate design for the tracker which will fit many collars.

HI Paprika, if you can get samples of all buckles of different dimensions it can be very useful for accurate designs. Place all of them on a flat surface and just take a photo of the top view, and mention the dimension of any one edge. Then all of us will be able to get all dimensions of the buckles.

Hello designers -
We have been getting a lot of creative and unique designs for the universal buckle adapter. Please keep sending us your designs. Be thinking about how we can attach a tracking device to a dog collar without having it hang off or around the collar. The tracking device itself will be about 1.25" x 1.25" x 0.375".

Thanks and good luck!

Thanks for your comment USLANDS2CAD. You make a good point and we definitely want a solution that works for as many collar sizes as possible (not just 1" collars). We are starting out focused on the 1" size, but will welcome any designs that solve for more sizes.
Wed, 09 Aug 2017 18:17:00 +0000
Paprika, I have reviewed your request for a product buckle that is interchangeable with a wide range of existing buckles available on the market. I have also reviewed some of the commentary. One of the comments in the comment section that stands out is Adam's comment about the range of size of buckle (3/4" - 2"). You may want to consider the range of size of buckle to further make the buckle adapter interchangeable with the many collars available rather than limiting it to 1" collars. With that, you'll be able to market your product to a wider audience. It's just a suggestion. Your thoughts are welcome.

We have uploaded two additional pictures that will further explain what we are trying to accomplish. One of the attachments, "Collar on Sam", shows how the device will connect to an existing pet collar. The other attachment, "Device", shows a depiction of the device itself with a male and female adapter on each side. The challenge we have is that there are many different types of collars with many different types of buckles to connect to. Hope this helps!

Hello paprika

You need modular Male and female buckles designed to fit the dimensions as given
A) 2.7mm B) 1.1mm C) 1.0mm

A) 1.9mm B) 0.5mm C) 0.8mm
A) 2.8mm B) 0.5mm C) 0.75mm
A) 2.9mm B) 1.15mm C) 0.8mm

or is there anything more we should concentrate on ?

Hello everyone! If you haven't already, clear remember to provide an STL file for us so we can print and verify your results meet our requirements. If you can indicate in the file name which file is STL it would be great as not all entries above list the file extension or call out the STL file by name. We are excited to see the submissions so far!

Another thing to think about with the design of the male buckle adapter is that the middle guide post, which creates stability and ensures a tight fit, can't be too long so that it prevents it from fitting completely into the female end of a variety of clips. Consider either reducing the length/size of the middle guide post or eliminating it completely if the buckle will maintain its stability.

Hello designers and thanks to those of you who have already submitted entries. We're seeing a variety of designs, which is good. All of the designs so far have been plastic adapters. We want to challenge you to think about other possible materials and designs.

Think about how you can solve the following problem: We are trying to create a tracking device that attaches to any existing pet collar with a buckle. The challenge is that there are many different types of pet collars on the market and among the pet collars with buckles there are not less than 50 different buckle types. Our goal is to be able to attach the pet tracking device between the existing buckles on the collar. The tracking device itself will have a modular design where the male and female ends will connect to either side of the tracking device and then be able to connect to any existing pet collar with a buckle.

So, we would recommend that in addition to the plastic buckle designs you should also consider other potential materials such as rubber or soft flexible plastic. We would also recommend thinking about a ratcheted design that will secure tightly to a variety of existing buckle types.

Thanks!
Paprika

The 1" size is referring to the width of the collar itself not the dimensions of the buckle.

Correcting statement below. I forgot you have to be careful about using the "pound" sign on CadCrowd comments:

Your initial scope was to have a device that accommodated the approx 1" size side release buckles. However, your data is showing that it needs to accommodate the 3/4" ranges as well ( 2# and 3# on the matrix). 3/4" buckles are under size for a 1" wide collar. That would put 2# and 3# and out of range. These buckles typically are grouped by size (2", 1.5", 1.0", 3/4") Would I be correct in this ?

La'al Ratty Locomotive & Coaches Creation Contest of Funitude!! :D
I basically need No. 7 River Esk. It's a 2-8-2 with 8-wheeled tender in lnwr blackberry livery with black, off-white, & red lining. The other stuff can be found in the pictures. The Non Open Coaches are blue & white, the open coaches are maroon. I'd like them ALL to be ready to run *that means I need the chassis motor built in, built in the locomotive itself of course*. The couplings are 3-link couplings. The coaches are bogie used. I can add the bogies, I just need it to where they just need to be screwed into the floor of the coaches :). Also, the engine and coaches need brake pipes on both ends of both the engine & coaches. Also, there are 10 coaches, only 3 are open coaches, the rest are the regular ones.

Gnome needed for Garden Device
Our company, GnomeBOT, is working on a garden automation tool and we need a design for the product case. The case will look like a gnome, and will How did we come up with a gnome? Think about the home automation tools you've seen. They either look like a 90's router (box with antennas out of the top), or they're sleek modern works of art. Think about the Nest thermostat. What does it look like? Your grandma's thermostat, right? Except much more modern. That's what we're going for: a nod at your grandma's gnome, but modern. Points of consideration: > Our device is a gnome, and a computer/robot. We're looking for a modern way to blend the two. >The gnome will house electronic components including sensors (with external probes which will plug in via ports), a 16x2 LCD, a PCB, and an antenna. >The final product will be waterproof. Avoid any areas that could pool water. >The product will go outside in customer's yards. Consider a base or large footprint to keep the unit stable >There will be plugs for sensors connecting to the gnome. Please plan an area for 5-8 probes to connect. >Design will need to be printed as 2 halves that come together once the internal components are in place.
River Irt Fun Time Contest
I need No. 3 River Irt, it's livery is mid-green with yellow & black lining. Images will show you the extra stuff for detail. I want it with a 3-link coupling on the front buffer beam & back of the tender. River Irt is an 0-8-2 outside cylinder narrow gauge outline tender engine with 8-wheeled tender. I DO want this to be *aswell as the steam engine from my other contest*. To be usable on N-Scale Track and be RTR. The Scale is O-9 *7mm (O Scale) Locomotives & Rolling Stock on 9mm (N Gauge) Track, the same goes for the other contest*.
