Ruggedized "Case" for 3D Scanner

in Concept Design held by james.monsen
Contest Ended, Winner(s) have been selected.
Description:
We are looking to produce a custom ruggedized "case" for a professional 3D scanning instrument. This instrument is often used on construction job sites, and the threat of damage due to drops or falls is quite high. We envision a 1/2" dense foam "cage" of sorts that will fit over the body of the scanner. Please see the attached 3D model, video and pictures for a more complete idea of our needs.
Wants:
Winning design must primarily provide protection for the instrument in the event of a fall. Additional considerations will be for ergonomics of handling the scanner (i.e. ridges on the side of the case to enhance grip), manufacturability, ventilation to the instrument, etc. Again, please see attached model, video and pictures.

Software:
  1. SolidWorks
  2. Autodesk Inventor

Fairly simple design. The scan data file size was so big it made the computer choppy and it was hard to reverse engineer it exactly, but it close. More renders on my portfolio.

#2 Lasser Case Concept by NXTGear LLC (D. Boyd)
Rough concept of the case design. Dimensions are approximate as they were extracted from a PLY file. Need drawing or solid dimension for detailed design.
Ventilated case, thick grip handles for transportation and positioning on tripod. Easy removal with split case design.

#15 Case: composite hard rubber by Aniket41
Hello,
Here is my first design for the contest. I suggest moulded rubber case fastened with screws for this purpose. I tried to make the model from .ply file but its not accurate. So please consider this as an illustration to convey the basic idea and design.
Thanks!

Added some hand/finger grips. Two different options here. I personally like the black one. It seems more natural to grab or rest a hand there. One more render on my portfolio showing improved top side.

If this contest could be extended and the proper info (i.e. step) of the model would be given, there would be more entries

Unfortunately, I won't be able to get the .igs or .step files in time before this contest ends. My primary computer won't be repaired in time.

If you can, please work with the .ply file. I understand if the dimensions aren't exactly perfect. We will make whatever slight modifications at a later date if necessary. Thanks again!

The problem with a ply file is that even if you reverse engineer it, there will be issues with exact dimensions and ultimately lead to an improper fitting. So if you can provide a step/ iges file, the fitments can be checked properly. I request you to upload the neutral format files and increase the time frame for the contest for a good response.

My apologies on the delays getting the .step and .igs files for everybody. My computer that I was doing the modeling on died. Trying to get it back up and running ASAP.

This scanner is marketed under a few names. Trimble TX5, FARO Focus 120, FARO X30, FARO X130 and FARO X330. Dimensions are identical for each different model. Thanks!

Will the cage sit above the plastic cover or you are gonna remove the plastic cover and use just the cage instead of that?

Yes. The clearance between the top of the instrument and the existing plastic protection is only 1/32". Thanks for the question!

@Manuel Rosso

Thank you for commenting on this project. I am looking for a cover that will remain in place during the use of the instrument. I have uploaded a .ply mesh of the instrument. I will also be uploading a .stp file shortly.

Revolutionary Meditation Bench
A standard meditation bench made of wood gets a makeover. We are looking to create a fully-adjustable, lightweight, travel version of a wooden meditation bench for manufacture via injection molding (plastic). The bench consists of 2 legs, of the same size, 7.5 inches tall. Atop is a main sitting piece, which is at right angles to the legs and is 18 inches long and 7 inches deep. All parts are ½ inch thick, or thinner. The bench needs to be able to support the weight of an adult. The main sitting piece (piece “A” in the sketch) needs to be rotational such that it can be tilted forward in order to create an angled seating platform. This adjustment is to conform to the seating angle of the meditator to create comfortable sitting position. The piece must lock out once in place at the desired setting, in order to provide stability while sitting on it (aka it does not move). The legs must also be foldable (collapsible), such that they fold in towards the main sitting piece in some manner, in order to make the bench small and practical for travelling or storage. The collapsed final bench should be ideally 1 inch thick, or thereabouts. Here is a link to what a "standard" bench looks like. Panzer Cases - GoPro Protective Case
Concept design/model for the interior packaging of a case to safely store/transport a GoPro camera(s) and assorted mounts, batteries, media and other accessories. See attachments for full details. This is the first in a series of projects to provide bespoke interiors to fit innumerable types of delicate and technical equipment, such as cameras, lenses, scientific equipment. As we would like to have continuity across our range, to present a strong brand, a successful designer for this project would then be strongly considered for use with all further future projects.
Kettle Bar
The Kettle bar is an adjustable kettle bell with the ability to fit standard weights plates to add and remove weights for the user. There is a requirement for 2 different types of handles, a simple T-bar for 2 handed kettle bell movements and a secondary handle for one-handed exercises. Both handles are to be interchangeable for the single bar type.
