Questions and answers
Products and assemblies intended for a real manufacturing or controlled build program, with a defined or developing fabrication method, supplier path, or production process. This can include low-volume and one-off engineered products such as race vehicles, specialty equipment, marine products, prototypes intended for production development, and custom fabricated assemblies. I am generally not a fit for hobby projects, student work, DIY fabrication, or speculative inventions without a credible technical and manufacturing path.
Yes. Shop size does not matter. I specialize in developing top-level Technical Data Packages (TDPs) for entrepreneurial and growing manufacturing teams—creating the drawings, specifications, BOMs, configuration, and production information needed to make the product transferable. Good product definition enables a team to scale production, outsource work confidently, qualify additional suppliers, and ramp without keeping critical manufacturing knowledge in one person’s head.
I keep the work moving while identifying and registering unresolved assumptions, interfaces, dimensions, requirements, or engineering decisions. I return those items as clear questions or decision points so the client can obtain the necessary input without having to rediscover the problem.
I consider how the design will actually be made, purchased, assembled, inspected, revised, and controlled. Depending on client and scope, that may include DFM/DFA/DFx, tolerances, materials and processes, tooling, supplier capability, make/buy considerations, BOM structure, configuration, inspection requirements, and opportunities to reduce unnecessary cost or complexity
I identify and register the issue, define the decision or analysis required, and provide the client with enough information to route it efficiently. If an engineer is not already assigned, I can help identify and source the appropriate discipline, define the scope, and coordinate the work; the engineer is contracted and paid directly by the client under a separate agreement. Where established standards, published criteria, or previously approved requirements provide the design basis, I can often develop the design directly within those constraints. Items requiring engineering judgment or approval remain clearly identified until resolved and incorporated into the controlled design.
