  - Direct tripping, connections, casing runs, and bottomhole-assembly handling, and keep the crew out of the red zone.
  - Monitor weight on bit, rotary speed, pump pressure, pit levels, and returns, and stop the job on a kick, loss, or equipment fault.
  - Keep the daily drilling report, pipe tally, and handover accurate.
  - Supervise the floor crew and enforce permits, lockout, and dropped-object rules.
  - Respond to well-control and rig emergencies under the station bill.
