About the job
Hi! I am looking for a senior mechanical engineer or industrial designer with extensive experience in SolidWorks, Design for Additive Manufacturing (DFAM), and CNC machining, to take over the mechanical packaging and joint mechanisms of a 3-axis camera gimbal.
This is an advanced academic hardware project. All electronic architecture, custom PCBs, firmware, and closed-loop control have already been developed by me. My focus is entirely on the system's logic and control, so I need an expert to ensure the mechanical enclosure matches this level of excellence.
The Engineering Challenge (Crucial):
The mechanical structure must not flex. Any low-frequency oscillation or resonance in the plastic arms will directly interfere with the IMU readings and destabilize my control loop, causing motor vibrations. I need a design that guarantees maximum torsional rigidity.
Scope of Work (Deliverables):
Handle (Grip) Design: Ergonomic and compact modeling to house the main PCB (110x60mm), 2x 18650 batteries, 1.69 inch display, and PS4 joystick.
Sliding Rails & Joint Mechanisms: Design a sliding rail system on the arms and phone mount to allow precise center-of-mass balancing for different smartphone sizes and weights. Include clamping brackets for arm length adjustment using brass heat-set inserts (M3) to ensure a secure, friction-based lock.
Material Study: Evaluate if 3D printing (Carbon Fiber PETG) is sufficient to prevent oscillation, or propose switching arms to machined...

Balancing & Kinematics: Ensure the sliding mechanisms allow the centers of mass of the moving payloads (different smartphones) to perfectly intersect their respective motor axes.
MATLAB Simulation Ready: Provide the final CAD models in a format optimized for kinematic/dynamic simulations in MATLAB (e.g., proper STEP assemblies with defined coordinate systems and accurate mass properties, or exported via the Simscape Multibody Link plugin).
Note on Files: I have the complete 3D models (STEP) of all internal components (motors, batteries, PCB, LCD, etc.). To protect intellectual property, these will be shared exclusively with the hired freelancer upon project kickoff. The visual reference for the desired outcome is the DJI RS 5 (adapted for a smartphone payload scale).
