Description:
I’m looking for innovative and practical 3D design concepts for storage trays that securely organize and protect electrical wiring devices (such as receptacles and switches) inside service truck drawers and portable organizer boxes. These trays will be 3D printed and used in real-world field conditions, so they must balance durability, compactness, and usability. The trays should:
Securely support devices by their metal yokes, not the finished faces
Prevent movement, rubbing, or impact damage during transit
Store devices in a space-efficient and compact layout, most likely on their sides and possibly staggered for toggle switches with longer protrusions
Be modular and scalable, allowing different tray lengths or capacities (e.g., 4, 6, 8 devices per tray)
Be usable as single-layer inserts for shallow drawers or nestable/stackable units for deeper boxes
Allow easy loading and unloading of devices without excessive force or careful placement
There will be 4-5 different wiring devices to accommodate (standard receptacles, toggle switches, Decora receptacles/switches & combination devices).
I will provide:
Basic photos and measurements
Manufacturer model numbers
The goal of this contest is to collect multiple design concepts. After selecting the winner, I will work with that designer to refine the model, finalize printable files, and possibly create alternate tray sizes or styles.
Wants:
Submissions will be evaluated based on the following:Device Protection: Must prevent damage by supporting each device via the metal yoke/frame
Space Efficiency: Compact layout that minimizes wasted space while maintaining usability
Universal Fit: Preference for a tray that fits multiple types of devices. Two variations (flush vs. protruding/toggle) are acceptable if needed
Modularity: Ability to scale tray length/capacity based on how many devices need to be stored
Nestable/Stackable Design: Trays should align or lock when stacked in deeper storage boxes
Ease of Use: Devices must be easy to insert and remove without tools or forcing
Printability: Must be compatible with standard FDM 3D printers (e.g., Bambu X1C, Prusa MK4)
Visual Communication: Clear renders, previews, or labeled sketches showing tray layout and function
Don't Wants:
Designs that require me to provide exact dimensions or high-detail models of every device (May be available through online sources)Designs that require me to provide CAD drawings of the devices (These may be available from the manufacturer directly but will not be provided by me)
Loose-fit trays that allow devices to bounce around or contact each other
Trays that can’t be stacked or nested in deeper boxes
Overly complex or multi-part designs that are difficult to print or use in the field
Ask for Sample:
Renders or STL previews showing the tray layout and device orientation
A short explanation of your design choices and how they solve the stated goals
Bonus if you show a fully loaded tray or multiple tray sizes
Extra credit for flexible, parametric, or scalable designs
Software:
- Onshape

Discussion
Though you wanted it to be designed in Onshape, people are providing you CAD files in STP and STL format. What's the point in insisting Onshape? I don't use Onshape. Shall I design the product in any other software and provide you the files in STP and STL format?
I wish to participate. But I need this to be clarified.

Please check my profile for the component reference 3d models. You can just download them and use them in your presentation or use them to reference with your designs.
I've just completed the 885TRLA and should have the others completed soonest. I looked for additional dimensions but was unable to find but the important parts should be correct.

Do you have an idea of what 3d printers you will be using for the print?
Hi Robert,
I've submitted my design which includes the. step and .stl file and a drawing. Along with it, a project report with all the details is also attached.
Thanks a lot

Hi Robert,
I Just submitted my design which includes .STEP and .STL files aswell as a pdf drawing. Please let me know if you require any other file formats.
Thanks, Kristjan

I prefer using OnShape however I am open to other software's as long as they are free to use and are easy to operate without a large learning curve
The wiring device storage trays will be used across a variety of drawers and compartment boxes. Once the tray designs are finalized, I will configure the interior layout of each drawer or box around the trays—sizing and arranging compartments based on the specific dimensions and layout of the trays required for each application.
Two questions for you:
1. Do you have a specific packout/container you use and what are the dimensions?
2. Are you set on using onshape, or are you fine with other software that can provide STL files (SolidWorks, Fusion, etc)?

It is interesting project. Is possible to have it as "STEP" or "Parasolid" file.
Hi! I'm very interested in this project. I can develop modular tray concept that securely holds each device by the metal yoke, without touching the face. The design supports stacking/nesting, easy insertion, and is optimized for FDM printing (e.g., Prusa, Bambu).
I'll include variations for both standard and toggle-style switches, and make it scalable (4, 6, 8-device trays). I'll share STL previews and visual renders showing layout, fit, and functionality. Looking forward to submitting soon!Hi! I'm very interested in this project. I'm already working on a modular tray concept that securely holds each device by the metal yoke, without touching the face. 3D Modeling and Roof Design
I would like an exterior and roof designed based on my floor plans. Project MUST be done in Chief Architect. Looking for a modern style home, shed roofs, similar to the contemporary home on our website http://www.inartifex.com/#!untitled/zoom/cqxa/image1ido
Material can be a mix of stucco, board and batten, limit the use of stone as the home is budget conscious.
Feel free to be creative. You do not need to use the existing material etc.
