Description:
Problem: Many people who are dependent on crutches have a difficult time navigating stairs. The risk of falls and severe injury are considerable, and in the acutely-injured or post-operative patient, these risks are oftentimes compounded by pain, post-operative dizziness, and narcotic usage. Most patients who are concerned about falling scoot up backwards on their buttocks, using their palms to propel them up one step at a time.

Solution: A padded rectangular box that spans two step risers with a handle to lift it up to each successive step. The device is largely rectangular and the lower-step portion is wide and flat enough to allow it to be stable when on a flat non-step surface, such as a landing.

Design parameters: Legally, stair risers must be between 6 and 7.5 inches in height, with a width minimum of 22 inches. A typical step is 11 inches in depth. The lower stair portion should be at least as long as the upper stair length, to make standing on the device while on a flat landing more stable.

The device should have multiple 1/2" slide-in/click-on element for the upper stair portion to adjust for differences in stair heights. This is not currently in my drawings
Wants:
I have the dimensions of the device largely set. I need a CAD rendering to send to a manufacturer for advanced prototypes and eventual mass production.

Some additional design elements: adjustability for stair height, material selection, any ideas for handle improvement
Don't Wants:
I welcome all ideas for improvement, although the design at this point is functional.
Software:
  1. Standard programs: AutoCAD, etc

By the way, I forgot to mention an important feature of my project. My project is designed as adjustable. In other words, if the user finds the part to be held far or close from himself, he can adjust the part thanks to the gaps in the part called "Staircase Extractor 18 by 15 by 1 mm Part".

Hello sir, thank you for trying to help people with innovative projects.
But I want to ask you, how an injured person would be able to lift this object as long as it is not tied to its leg?

Height adjustment for individuals is also a good idea. It can be done similarly to adjusting the height of the upper riser segment; multiple attachments can be added to the upper AND lower segments to raise total height. I built multiple devices out of wood and tried them on different people, from 5'2" to 6' and it seemed to work on most. The typical difference in total body height might be around 12 inches, but the difference in foot-to-bent-knee height is more like only 2 inches. Splitting the difference seemed to suffice, at least for now. But once again, I am open to any clever ideas!

Climbing down stairs is obviously more difficult. That is one of the reasons that stability of the device is so important. It needs to be stable, light enough, and easily maneuvered with one hand (ie balances front to back and side to side) so it can be safely moved down one stair as well as up one. The customer would go down the stairs backwards, exactly in reverse to going upwards.
The iwalk2 is a clever device, but requires a significant amount of coordination and balance even on level ground. It becomes dangerous on stairs for less athletic people.
If the stair climber can be manufactured inexpensively, I believe that many people who are on crutches will buy one in addition to whatever device they use (knee scooter, iwalk2, etc)

Hi Thomas,
Have 2 doubts, it will be helpful if you if you advise on these, Thank you! :)
1. Product to be used for Climbing up only, what about going down from stairs? required?
2. One of the product from iwalk 2.0(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KBXDJRj-XM) is suitable for going both ways on stairs, are you concerned more about stability?

The customer lifts the handle to move the device from one step to the next, then kneels back on it to get the healthy leg up a step.
Tue, 08 Jun 2021 21:20:36 +0000
I cannot understand how it works. How does the user lift the box when she has the knee supported by the box? Is the user standing along the box using her feets when it lifts he box? Does she climb one step with the non suported leg? It would be possible for you to illustrate the workings of the device with a series of photos or a video? Thank you

Stylish, minimalistic pencil case
We are looking for inspiration and designs for a very minimalistic, yet stylish pencil case, which will be produced out of (paper) pulp by extrusion. The case should have a lid, either attached to its body or separate. It also should have some kind of clasp, in the broadest sense, to secure the lid and prevent it from opening. Could be a clamp, clip, rubber strap or anything that serves the purpose. Also, the lid's surface should be mostly flat, because we plan to print on it. Dimensions for the case should be roughly H65mm x W190mm x D30mm. There are two design approaches that both could lead to viable results: A: The attached image "Sample A" shows a product that is VERY close to what we envisage. You could simply modify this example in its details, in order to create an equally minimalistic, stylish product that still differentiates itself to a reasonable degree from the depicted sample. B: Create something from scratch. There are many examples of pulp-based containers available, we have compiled some examples on image "Sample B".
Modern Design 12v FAN
We are looking for a modern design of a Fan that will be powered by a 12V DC brushless motor. The design must fulfill ALL of the listed requirements to be eligible for the prize (please read all requirements till the end): 1. Design • Modern look & feel • New design, no redesign of existing models • The fan has to use a fan blade, so no Dyson models • Innovative and accessible for a broad audience (see image 1 – mood board) 2. Quality • High quality finish with the use of quality plastic • Components / parts have to be (nearly) seamless 3. Product requirements • Compact - See image 2 for measurements • Light • Rigid • Strong - for bumpy conditions • Easy to use • Quiet • Safe - Loss of fingers is not allowed • Durable 4. Performance • High output • Low usage • Efficient! 5. Technical requirements • Use of a 12V DC brushless motor • Use of 12V wiring • Easy to use locking mechanism • Easy to use positioning solution Product description: This contest will consist of designing a fan that will be powered by a 12V DC brushless motor. Base of the fan: The Fan needs to be mounted on a previously designed base (image 3), so the 12V wiring must lead from the motor housing through the fan to the central point in the base. Fan blade: Designing the fan blade is a crucial part of the contest. The design of the fan needs to facilitate the maximum blade surface possible within the size restrictions of the overall model. Also the fan blade has obviously safety restrictions, so caging of the fan blade is required. This has to be in line with the esthetics of the overall design but shouldn’t interfere with its performance. Positioning and locking: The fan needs to be able to turn/pivot in all directions and be able to be locked in any position. The locking mechanism needs to be low tech, easy to use and in line with the esthetics of the overall design. Also it has to be strong and be able to resist bumpy conditions. Motor: The fan will be powered by a 12V motor (for dimensions see image 4). The fan will be operated by a potentiometer mounted on a PCB (for schedule see image 5) of which the form can be shaped to fit the design (needs to have realistic dimensions for production). The motor and the potentiometer are both external components, so selecting or designing them are not part of the contest. It is important that you have taken into account the dimensions of both parts, the wiring that will be used and the weight the motor has. Speed Control: The speed should be controlled through a turning knob connected to the potentiometer. This knob is an integral part of the design and should be aligned with the overall look and feel of the design. Wiring: Wiring is an essential part of the design and needs to be done efficient and realistically. Furthermore the wiring needs to be accessible for assembly and concealed in the design. Overall requirements: • All solutions need to be manufacturable and preferably seamless integrated where possible; • Parts need to be manufactured using injection moulding with minimal mould complexity; • On conclusion all files should be of a professional quality (including STEP files) so they can be handed over to our Injection Moulding partner; • Non injection components should be minimal and easily available in the market or easily manufacturable; • Modern, minimalistic but high quality look & feel is an absolute must. Documentation: Please provide high quality rendering images (in three colors, matted black/grey, glossy white and glossy red)and preferably 3D PDF(.U3D) files during the contest. STEP + STL files are required on completion. Communication: We will provide comments and give feedback on every entry as soon as possible. Also we will use the rating system available on the dashboard and use the discussion board for general information or comments. We will look at every entry and work as fast as we can, so no need to send unnecessary PM’s. Award: We will award the 1st price ($2,000) to the best overall idea that meets - or only needs minor polish to meet - ALL the requirements. Keep the Racoons out of the Garbage Cans
We would like to figure out an easy attachment to put on a standard Uline trash to keep at a minimum, racoons out of the can. Uline Model H-7937BL. The lid that opens 270° on molded hinges. 65 Gallon L27 x W27 x H44"Weight is 29lbs. Ideally this would fit numerous trash cans. We have seen straps, but we are looking for something that keeps it closed by just shutting the lid but will allow the can to open with the weight of the garbage inside when a truck picks it up and flips it. Let's put the weight of the garbage at min. 20lb
auto-tuning radio
I have a provisional patent and am looking for help to make a prototype. The device should have two digital tuners controlled by a computer, each capable of receiving digital radio signal and digital ID co-broadcasted by radio stations. The computer uses one tuner to scan radio frequencies and sorts available radio signals based on station name, program genre, and music group. This device should be able to find a radio station based on station name rather than by frequency. Some national radio stations such as Public Radio broadcast on multiple frequencies on overlapping terrains. In a moving vehicle, when the signal deteriorates on one frequency, this device should be able to use the second tuner to scan for better signal and achieve seamless transition from one frequency to another without interrupting the program by switching the roles of the two tuners.
