TIME REMAINING: 21 days, 11 hours
Description:
Problem: Many people who are dependent on crutches have a difficult time navigating stairs. The risk of falls and severe injury are considerable, and in the acutely-injured or post-operative patient, these risks are oftentimes compounded by pain, post-operative dizziness, and narcotic usage. Most patients who are concerned about falling scoot up backwards on their buttocks, using their palms to propel them up one step at a time.

Solution: A padded rectangular box that spans two step risers with a handle to lift it up to each successive step. The device is largely rectangular and the lower-step portion is wide and flat enough to allow it to be stable when on a flat non-step surface, such as a landing.

Design parameters: Legally, stair risers must be between 6 and 7.5 inches in height, with a width minimum of 22 inches. A typical step is 11 inches in depth. The lower stair portion should be at least as long as the upper stair length, to make standing on the device while on a flat landing more stable.

The device should have multiple 1/2" slide-in/click-on element for the upper stair portion to adjust for differences in stair heights. This is not currently in my drawings
Wants:
I have the dimensions of the device largely set. I need a CAD rendering to send to a manufacturer for advanced prototypes and eventual mass production.

Some additional design elements: adjustability for stair height, material selection, any ideas for handle improvement
Don't Wants:
I welcome all ideas for improvement, although the design at this point is functional.
Software:
  1. Standard programs: AutoCAD, etc

By the way, I contacted my manufacturer and they prefer Solidworks for their CAD designs if possible.

Height adjustment for individuals is also a good idea. It can be done similarly to adjusting the height of the upper riser segment; multiple attachments can be added to the upper AND lower segments to raise total height. I built multiple devices out of wood and tried them on different people, from 5'2" to 6' and it seemed to work on most. The typical difference in total body height might be around 12 inches, but the difference in foot-to-bent-knee height is more like only 2 inches. Splitting the difference seemed to suffice, at least for now. But once again, I am open to any clever ideas!

Climbing down stairs is obviously more difficult. That is one of the reasons that stability of the device is so important. It needs to be stable, light enough, and easily maneuvered with one hand (ie balances front to back and side to side) so it can be safely moved down one stair as well as up one. The customer would go down the stairs backwards, exactly in reverse to going upwards.
The iwalk2 is a clever device, but requires a significant amount of coordination and balance even on level ground. It becomes dangerous on stairs for less athletic people.
If the stair climber can be manufactured inexpensively, I believe that many people who are on crutches will buy one in addition to whatever device they use (knee scooter, iwalk2, etc)

Hi Thomas,
Have 2 doubts, it will be helpful if you if you advise on these, Thank you! :)
1. Product to be used for Climbing up only, what about going down from stairs? required?
2. One of the product from iwalk 2.0(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9KBXDJRj-XM) is suitable for going both ways on stairs, are you concerned more about stability?

The customer lifts the handle to move the device from one step to the next, then kneels back on it to get the healthy leg up a step.
Tue, 08 Jun 2021 21:20:36 +0000
I cannot understand how it works. How does the user lift the box when she has the knee supported by the box? Is the user standing along the box using her feets when it lifts he box? Does she climb one step with the non suported leg? It would be possible for you to illustrate the workings of the device with a series of photos or a video? Thank you

Nice Empathetic design product. Let's work !

Similar Contests on Cad Crowd

Mobile Tool Cart
New model of mobile tool cart which may cross industries such as manufacturing shop floor, motorsports, hospital maintenance etc. Consider using the maximum volume of the footprint for storage. See attachment for list of must have and nice to have as well as an example of what we build today.
Server 3D Explosion
I need to have a server created to match an existing piece of art, which is an exploded touch screen. Unfortunately the designer is no longer available who created the exploded touch screen. The design should match the look at feel as much as possible and use the same colors and style to show an exploded 1U server.
auto-tuning radio
I have a provisional patent and am looking for help to make a prototype. The device should have two digital tuners controlled by a computer, each capable of receiving digital radio signal and digital ID co-broadcasted by radio stations. The computer uses one tuner to scan radio frequencies and sorts available radio signals based on station name, program genre, and music group. This device should be able to find a radio station based on station name rather than by frequency. Some national radio stations such as Public Radio broadcast on multiple frequencies on overlapping terrains. In a moving vehicle, when the signal deteriorates on one frequency, this device should be able to use the second tuner to scan for better signal and achieve seamless transition from one frequency to another without interrupting the program by switching the roles of the two tuners.
The Steam Punk Jet Engine F3
Looking for someone to design a cool graphic for my Formula 3 race car. The idea is to render the image onto a 3D image of the vehicle and tweak it until everyone is happy. I'm working on having a 3D image done in CAD as we speak - but would like to start the creative part by soliciting ideas on what kind of images might work on the different parts of the vehicle and how it all ties together. You will see in the attached powerpoint what kind of concept I'm after (Bugatti, VW, etc...), steam punk, jet engines, etc... and you'll also see picture of the actual F3. Again, this will work best once I have a 3D version - so this first round is all about finding cool artwork and figuring out what goes where. I DO want the sheet metal pop-rivet look (from the Bugatti) as the main them for the F# with cut-outs similar to how it was done on the VW to expose the guts. I also think that the large engine cooling shrouds on each side of the vehicle could be jet engine, possibly with small flames shooting out of the vertical breather fins - but that's just one idea. I welcome any and all other ideas.
Transport UAS/UAV/Drone
The purpose of this project is to look into the feasibility of creating a proof of concept electric powered UAV that is autonomous, can carry varied payloads (fixed camera, camera on a gimbal, carry case to transport goods, etc.), has a flight time of 60+ minutes, and most important, radical in design! Must have at least 4 engines. Not looking for a COTS solution or similar. I would like to have the UAS to be modular for various mission capabilities. Mission (Crime Prevention, Fire Management, Emergency Response, Intelligence, Fire Investigation & Damage Assessment, Accident Reconstruction, Search and Rescue, Forensics, Event & VIP Security, Tactical situational awareness & targeting, Perimeter & convoy security, Covert Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance, Anti-piracy, tactical ship boarding, De-mining, Emergency & disaster response HAZMAT/CBRNE management, etc.) payload(s) and flight characteristics might include: • Surveillance with Gimbal, or Gimbals to allow for 360 degree view o FLIR, HD RGB (or HDMI if possible), NIR, NDVI, LWIR, Lidar • Area Mapping for mitigation, disaster recovery, assessments, inspections, etc. • High Speed with Heavy Lift capability for emergency medical devices/medications. o This is for cargo, with an understanding that a balance will need to be struck to determine maximum flight time. • Tether Mode (for training and long term situational awareness). o The possibility of powering unit and payload feed via tether. • Modular, hot-swappable, payload chamber(s) for Sensor Arrays for various scenarios that might include: o Collision Avoidance o Acoustic Detection and Location (Military, Public Services) o Electrochemical and Infrared Imaging Gas & Liquid Detectors (Environmental Air Sensing, Gas and Liquid Leak Detection, CBRNE) o Field Communications (Military) o Radiation Detection (CBRNE) o Ability to drop payloads such as: • Surface Vehicles (Rover, Boat, etc.) • Infrared Beacons • EPIRB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) • Sea Dye Markers • Stable in high wind (65+ km/h) environments o Preferably dust and water resistant • Sealed electronics area and designed for all weather flights o With regards to the Gimbal: • Dependable operation in wet, sandy, or humid environments, extreme temperatures, and in sustained winds of up to 50 km/h • Important: This UAS will NOT be weaponized Must be able to transition from Hover to Forward flight while conserving power: - Fixed Wing Flight; or where the Rotor Wing is locked to operate as a fixed wing - Rotary Wing Flight; as a quad copter with sustained hover capability - Conventional Takeoff & Landing - Short Take Off & Landing - Vertical Take Off & Landing - Reversible In-Flight Transition - Reversible On-Ground Transition. In addition, once the transition to forward flight is engaged, I'd like for the engine(s) to be a silent as possible. No parachute or net for recovery, and no launcher to get it airborne. While I'm not looking for a COTS UAV, I would like for it to use COTS Hardware and Software for the build. Rugged, reliable and capable - dependable in extreme environments • Up to 50-minutes endurance with payload, continuous operation model • High wind tolerance o 40 mph (65 km/h) sustained, o 55 mph (90 km/h) gusts Pre-assembled backpack deployment – airborne in minutes • Folding design protects payload & includes battery for powered standby • Payload, battery, arms, and legs are easily replaced in the field without tools Environmental Temperature Range: • -22F to –122F (-30C to 50C) Navigation LED’s • Red/Green • Red/NIR Modular chassis and modular electronics for easy access/replacement Must weigh less than 55 lbs./24kg With regards to dimensions, I think it will depend on how much of these requirements can be satisfied. Mobility is important so, the dimensions should allow for the UAS to fit into a case or similar. The attached images are for reference only. These show VTOL aircraft capable of transitional forward flight. In addition here is a link to a real example. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hUNJTAybCQQ
