Contest Ended, Winner(s) have been selected.
Description:
The task at hand is to find an economic low cost method to manufacture and upholster adult dental chair soft goods. Quality and life of covering must be robust, 10+ year life. The dental chair soft goods typically consist of three major components; underlying support structure, many times this is a vacuum formed plastic element, the seat foam, and the upholstery itself (see attached photos). Dental chairs are normally divided into two main components; 1) The back structure, 2) The seating structure. Key to this design initiative, should include an alternate way of securing the leather to the underside of the chair. Most chairs currently utilize hundreds of staples to secure the fabric, this poses to problems: 1) High direct labor, 2) No way to easily replace the upholstery covering. We are seeking a new innovative design ideas for new methods of manufacture without using staples or typical snap fittings.
Wants:
Estimated manufacturing costs, amount of direct labor, innovation.
Software:
- SolidWorks (2013)
- Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop

#8 Brutas DENTAL Chair
by Ashish Sitaram Shinde
Here is my first entry for the this challenge. I tried to make it more of a modern, kind and aesthetically pleasing chair, instead of a traditional one with only a slight redesign.
I also designed with up and down movement for lower seat and other parts also , which can be used to fit all the needed componements.
I'm awaiting for your feedback,
Regards,
-Ashish Shinde

#9 Dental Chair Concept
by BRAVO
My Dental Chair Concept
This is my concept for dental chair. Very Simple and easy for install and dismantle.
Do not use any high technology process or tools, just simple tools.
Do not need vacuum process.
Just single manpower able to do assembly.
Very low cost and not too much time needed to install and dismantle because simple.
Please refer attachments for concept details and sketch.
Thank you

Congrats Eira . ;)
I have submitted my entry, I have down work according to your requirement, and easy movement also given to made all chair in low cost with good quality, contact me I'll tell you more modification details if you want it.
Hi RickG.
I would like to request if you can extend the contest for 1 more week. I will be able to share my concept whitin that timeframe. I'm guessing since you didn't receive too many submittions you won't have any trouble doing that. I'm sure many other designers are looking forward to the opportunity to submit their concept as well.
Thanks, Pablo.

can you tolerate some holes in the plastic where the stabs are ??? i have a machinism in mind :)
Smita, Catia okay as long as you can demonstrate concept
Hari Vickey: NX 10 is okay as long as you can provide jpegs or step files to show concept.
Reply to Abertus Putra: Albertus, velcro may be a problem as the chair gets so many uses, that fabric could pull or get dislodged easily. However, you are on the right track, we are absolutely looking for multiple solutions.
Justin Logan: Hi, thanks for your interest. To answer your question "Can you tell me a little more about what you are expecting as an output?" As stated in our design description, we are seeking new innovative low cost design ideas and/or methods of manufacture without using staples or typical snap fittings to construct dental chair upholstery components . Output does not need to be CAD, could be hand sketches, renderings, etc. Need new low cost (low assembly labor) method to construct dental chair seats and backs. Upholstery attachment method should allow easy removal and replacement of fabric portion of chair if it begins to wear or get damaged. Does this answer your question?
Entry
: Although an interesting design, I have the following concerns: 1) I'm not sure this is a low cost method. 2) I am also concerned that the fabric will slip over time. 3) It has a high profile and most likely would be visible.

Hi,
I would like to participate !! can you rates our entries please ! ?

this is indeed an interesting contest, let's come up with different solutions,
I think to secure the fabric we can use velcro (hook and loop fasteners)
We can sew the fabric together with velcro, and place the counterpart on the frame

Can you tell me a little more about what you are expecting as an output? Are you looking to getting CAD for a system of how to attach the trim to the structure, or are you looking for CAD for the entire seat structure, foam and trim? I fear this would take significantly longer than 1 month.
Are you expecting the person you award the work to, to do the manufacturing as well, or are you intending on sourcing a more local business?

Can I use NX 10 to model it.
can I use catia v-21 and want more details about your requirement

arcylic box
End product is a flat pack clear (acrylic box) - without one side.
5 clear plastic sheets snap together to make a box without any tools and for it to be fairly easy to assemble and dismantle but when assembled for it to remain sturdy.
Thickness of plastic sheet 3mm+
L50cm x H50cm x W50cm for box approx
Large 3D bookshelf backstop
Inspired by the historical visual progression of mainboards, we are looking for an innovative design to use as the back of a large shelving unit.
We are looking for a design to go in a display case. The display case will then be used as a holder for glass shelves.
Think of it almost like a glass bookshelf. Except, instead of the back being a cheap piece of board held on with tack nails like a shelf from IKEA, the back will be the design you come up with.
Dimensions:
8ft wide
3ft high
1-3in deep
The case is being used to display tech items. So we would like the design to reflect technology. Think mother board but on our scale.
The original thought was to collect old motherboards, including ram and cpus. We were then going to lay them out on a 8x3 piece of plywood and glue them.
Instead of this, we now want to get a design that a CNC machine can make.
Material used:
Wood and old metal.
The design should induce a feeling of technological progression. So from left to right the design should transition from old circuit board tech, to current tech, to possible future tech (this part is open for interpretation)
As an example, in the attached picture, the green part is what we want to replace with our 3D circuit board idea. Please note that the picture is just one from google and does not represent the actual shelf we are building The entire shelf will sit on top of a table, meaning that it will be at eye level for the average person.
Engineering design: extending foundation pile support
3 different components need to join together to form 1 piece.
The combined assembly is a clamp on system, that clamps onto 36" diameter pipe, then when hydraulic pistons are activated the arms extend and lock out to approximately 45deg.
I have attached schematics showing in 2d what I am after. Potential for significant future work for winning designer.
Bas Relief Panels
Create bas relief panel models to be CNC routed from MDF sheet. I will provide exact panel dimensions, sketches of the design and images to be modeled. Photos of similar examples attached.
