Plastic Mold Designer:
Design & Development: Generate detailed 3D CAD models and 2D engineering drawings of molds, including core and cavity layouts, cooling systems, ejection systems, and runner/gating systems.
Design for Manufacturability (DFM): Analyze customer-provided part models for moldability, draft requirements, wall thickness consistency, and other design-for-manufacturing (DFM) principles.
Collaboration & Review: Interface with product engineers, program managers, and manufacturing teams to review preliminary layouts, suggest product design changes, and resolve potential manufacturing issues (e.g., warping, surface flaws).
Documentation: Create complete Bill of Materials (BOMs), prepare mold specifications, and manage design documentation and engineering change requests (ECNs).
Quality Assurance: Use software for mold flow analysis to optimize gate locations and processing parameters, conduct design reviews, and assist with initial mold trials on molding machines.
Troubleshooting: Provide technical support during the manufacturing process, troubleshoot mold malfunctions, and recommend revisions to improve design or reduce fabricating costs.
Department Head Mold Shop:
Operations Management: Oversee daily operations, including planning and scheduling work, allocating resources, and coordinating the activities of mold makers, machinists, and technicians.
Maintenance and Repair: Direct all mold maintenance and repair activities, perform troubleshooting on complex mold issues, and ensure adherence to preventative maintenance (PM) schedules to ensure molds are available and production-ready.
Quality Control: Work closely with quality control and engineering teams to ensure all molds and parts meet specific requirements and quality standards.
Team Leadership: Supervise, mentor, and train a team of employees, conducting performance evaluations, and fostering a safe, productive, and continuous improvement-focused work environment.
Project and Inventory Management: Manage inventory of spare parts and supplies, track project timelines and budgets, and manage the qualification process for new or repaired molds.
Safety and Compliance: Ensure strict adherence to all health, safety, and environmental regulations (e.g., OSHA, 5S, ISO standards).
Process Improvement: Analyze existing operations, identify opportunities for growth, and integrate advanced technologies or lean manufacturing principles to enhance efficiency and reduce costs.
Collaboration: Liaise with other department heads (e.g., production, engineering, quality assurance) to ensure seamless operations and resolve production problems.
Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of mold engineering, design principles, materials, and manufacturing processes, including proficiency with CAD software, manual machining tools (lathes, mills, grinders), and technical documentation (blueprints, schematics).
Soft Skills: Strong leadership, problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills are essential for managing a diverse team and coordinating with various stakeholders.
Work Environment: Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with machinery and noise, potentially requiring physical exertion and adherence to safety protocols.
