About the job
My name is William Merida with Crazy Ass Builders. We are looking to engage a structural engineer to review, refine, and seal a design for a semi-permanent shade sail installation located at 6314 Woodbend Drive, League City, Texas 77573.
Since this project is located in a designated catastrophe area, it is imperative that the design and installation are WPI-8 rated for TDI compliance.
Project Overview:
We are planning a shade sail system with a finished height of approximately 10 feet. Our goal is to use a combination of direct-embedment steel pillars and potentially the existing house structure.
Preliminary Design Intent (Subject to your review):
Structure Type: Semi-permanent. The client has a mandatory removal policy for the sail fabric during high-wind events (>40 mph) or named storms.
Pillars: Proposed 6” Diameter, Schedule 80 Galvanized Steel.
Foundations: Proposed 20” diameter drilled piers at a depth of 6’+ with 4,000 PSI concrete and a #6 rebar cage.
Hardware: 316 Stainless Steel load-rated turnbuckles and quick-release shackles for rapid removal.
Key Engineering Determinations Requested:
Attachment Strategy: We would like your professional recommendation on whether to utilize a ledger board attachment to the house's rim joist (with appropriate flashing and through-bolts) or if a fully freestanding 4-pillar system is the better path to ensure WPI-8 compliance without compromising the main dwelling's envelope.
Specifications: Verificatio...

Specifications: Verification of the steel gauge, footing depth, and rebar/tie schedule required for this specific wind zone.
Site Inspection: Please indicate if you will require a site visit to inspect the soil and existing house framing before finalizing the design, or if you can work from the photos and structural details I provide.
I have attached a preliminary design work-up and a visualization of our current plan to assist with your initial assessment.
Please let me know your availability and your fee structure for providing a sealed design and the necessary inspections for WPI-8 certification.
