About the job
Project Brief: Industrial Plant Layout Design from Scratch (High-Volume CNC Facility)
1. Project Overview
We are seeking an experienced Industrial Plant Layout Designer or Manufacturing Systems Engineer to design the complete shop floor layout from scratch for our new high-volume precision CNC machining facility. We will provide you with the bare architectural building shell (CAD drawing showing walls, structural columns, shutters, and mezzanine boundaries) along with our complete machine list and dimensional footprints. Your role is to develop an optimized, lean, and construction-ready plant layout accommodating 102 total machines (92 CNCs + 10 auxiliary machines).
2. Facility & Equipment Scope
The facility consists of a Ground Floor dedicated to raw material intake, cutting, machining, and dispatch, plus a Mezzanine Level dedicated to post-processing and packing. We machine multiple material families (specifically brass, copper, and ferrous/steel alloys), requiring strict swarf segregation and smooth high-frequency material flow.
What We Will Provide to Selected Candidates:
* Architectural shell drawing of the building (showing perimeter walls, column grid, lift/stair core location, mezzanine footprint, and the three access shutters: one 15' shutter and two 17' shutters).
* Exact footprints and specifications for all machines and storage racks.
Ground Floor Machine List to Be Placed:
* 32 Single-Spindle CNCs for straight items (footprint: 7'-0" x 6'-0" each)...

* Exact footprints and specifications for all machines and storage racks.
Ground Floor Machine List to Be Placed:
* 32 Single-Spindle CNCs for straight items (footprint: 7'-0" x 6'-0" each)
* 24 Single-Spindle CNCs for forging items (footprint: 7'-0" x 6'-0" each)
* 20 Single-Spindle CNCs with Bar Feeders (paired footprint: 14'-0" x 10'-0")
* 12 Double-Spindle CNCs with Bar Feeders (footprint: 17'-6" x 6'-6" each)
* 4 Turn-Mill Centers (footprint: 8'-2" x 5'-7" / 2500 x 1700 mm each)
* Auxiliary Equipment: 4 Cutting Bandsaws, 4 Special Purpose Machines (SPMs), and 2 Marking Machines
* Storage & Logistics Zones: Raw Material Storage Racks, Bar Stock Storage Racks, Cut Blank Bins, WIP (Work-in-Progress) Storage, Pallet Storage, and Loading/Dispatch Dock.
3. Key Design Objectives & Operational Requirements
You will design the layout from the ground up to achieve the following priorities:
* End-to-End Material Flow & Traffic Management: Establish clear primary and secondary aisles and assign optimal roles to our exterior shutters (15' and 17' shutters) so that incoming 10' to 12' bar stock, forgings, and outgoing finished dispatch pallets never bottleneck each other. Ensure smooth staging and safe turning radii around the Mezzanine Lift and Loading Dock.
* Cellular Grouping & Multi-Machine Tending: Group and orient the 92 CNCs into logical cells (Straight Items, Forgings, Single-Spindle Bar-Fed, Double-Spindle Bar-Fed, and Turn-Mill) so operators can efficiently tend multiple spindles simultaneously with clear sightlines and safe bar-loading clearances.
* Chip Evacuation, Scrap Recovery & Maintenance Access: Account for chip conveyor discharge directions, chip hopper swaps, coolant tank pull-outs, and electrical cabinet door clearances in every row. Incorporate a dedicated Swarf Processing / Chip Wringer & Scrap Segregation Zone to prevent cross-contamination between high-value non-ferrous (brass/copper) and ferrous chips.
* Shop Floor Support Integration: Allocate strategic floor space for In-Process QC Inspection Islands (surface plates, air/thread gauges), a centralized Tool Crib / Tool Presetter Area, and clearly defined WIP bin staging areas between machining operations and the mezzanine lift.
* Vertical Flow to Mezzanine: Design a seamless transition for parts moving from ground floor machining cells up to the mezzanine for post-processing and packing, and back down to the ground floor dispatch dock.
4. Required Deliverables
* Phase 1 (2 to 3 Concept Block & Cellular Layouts in 2D CAD / PDF): Multiple distinct layout concepts from scratch showing different zoning strategies, aisle configurations, shutter allocations, and machine orientations for review and comparison.
* Phase 2 (Material Flow & Spaghetti Diagrams): Visual routing diagrams overlaid on the selected concept mapping separate paths for long bar stock, forgings/cut blanks, WIP bins to and from the mezzanine, finished pallets to dispatch, and metal swarf/scrap bins exiting the plant.
* Phase 3 (Final Master Layout & Utility Drop Plan in DWG + PDF): Fully dimensioned Master Equipment Layout showing exact machine coordinates, column clearances, operator aisles, and safety walkways, along with a Utility & Trenching Overlay indicating overhead electrical busbar drops, compressed air headers, and coolant/oil mist extraction routing.
5. Ideal Candidate Profile
* Proven track record designing greenfield layouts from scratch for high-volume CNC turning/milling plants, automotive component manufacturing, or precision brass/metal turning shops.
* Practical knowledge of CNC lathe footprints, bar feeder loading clearances, chip conveyor geometries, and lean cellular manufacturing.
* Proficiency in AutoCAD or DraftSight (3D factory visualization or simulation software like Factory Design Utilities, SketchUp, or FlexSim is a bonus).
6. How to Apply / Proposal Requirements
Please share:
7. Two to three samples of past industrial or CNC plant layouts you have designed from scratch (confidential client details may be redacted).
8. A brief explanation of your methodology for zoning a 92-CNC shop floor that handles both bar-fed turning and chucking/forging operations.
9. Your estimated timeline and fixed-price quote (or milestone breakdown) for the three phases listed above.
