About the job
I am developing a custom 3-in-1 backpack chair for outdoor use and am looking for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer or Product Development Specialist to help turn my concept into a functional mechanical design.
I currently have AI-generated concept images and preliminary dimensions, but I do not have finalized mechanical engineering drawings or CAD files.
Product Concept
The product should transform between three configurations:
Backpack Mode: Folds into a compact, portable unit with integrated shoulder straps.
Chair/Recliner Mode: Opens into a stable outdoor chair with an adjustable reclining backrest.
Extended Lounge Bed Mode: Extends into a longer, flat or near-flat surface suitable for one person to lie down.
Scope of Work — Initial Phase
I would like to begin with concept development and mechanical feasibility before proceeding to the complete detailed design.
The initial phase should include:
Reviewing my concept images and preliminary dimensions.
Developing a practical frame and structural concept.
Proposing folding, reclining, locking, and extension mechanisms.
Identifying potential mechanical challenges and stability concerns.
Creating preliminary 3D CAD concepts or an assembly layout.
Providing recommendations for suitable materials and manufacturing methods.
Potential Second Phase
After approval of the concept, I would like to proceed with:
Complete 3D mechanical CAD assembly.
Detailed individual part...

Complete 3D mechanical CAD assembly.
Detailed individual part models.
Motion study demonstrating all configurations.
Dimensioned 2D engineering drawings.
STEP files and editable native CAD files.
Basic Bill of Materials (BOM).
Design for Manufacturing (DFM) recommendations.
Required Experience
Mechanical engineering and product development.
SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, Fusion 360, or equivalent.
Folding and reclining mechanisms.
Portable furniture, chairs, cots, or similar mechanical products.
Prototype development and manufacturing-oriented design.
Please Include in Your Proposal
Examples of similar mechanical products you have designed.
Your proposed approach for developing this mechanism.
Estimated cost and timeline for the initial concept phase.
Estimated cost for the complete detailed CAD phase.
Confirmation that you can develop functional mechanisms, not just exterior 3D models.
I am looking for a designer interested in developing a practical, manufacturable product from an early-stage concept.
