What CAD software should I choose for my contest?

If you require a specific CAD software for your project, then we recommend our private project service. If you simply need the CAD files to open with a certain CAD software package, then you can ask designers to supply a neutral CAD file format with their design entry.

Most clients leave the software field empty when they post a contest. If you choose a specific software, you’ll be limiting the number of entries that you receive on your contest. This is because designers don’t usually own more than a couple CAD software packages (there are literally hundreds on the market) and each software is expensive (often $5,000-$50,000 per license).

Accepting different CAD software entries on your contest is usually not an issue. since the designer can just export the native CAD files (i.e. SolidWorks) to a neutral CAD file format that can be opened with most CAD software (i.e. STEP, IGES, Parasolid, etc.). Make sure to describe the end use of your contest design to help the designers submit files in a format that you’ll be able to use.
