Compact Pick-and-Place Mechanism – Cam Design & SOLIDWORKS Motion Simulation
University design project: a single-motor pick-and-place carousel that moves relays from a feeder tray to a target position, designed and simulated in SOLIDWORKS.
How it works:
- A NEMA 23 stepper drives a 10T pinion meshing with a 24T internal gear, turning a carousel of ten arms
- Each spring-loaded arm follows a stationary cam track, so the suction cups lift and lower at the pick and place points without extra actuators
- A central vacuum hub and tubing feed the suction cups
Engineering work:
- Cam path designed for pressure angle and smooth lift
- Spring force sized with Hooke's law and checked against the cam contact force
- SOLIDWORKS Motion study of cam path, contact force, arm displacement and motor torque, used to compare required torque with what the motor can supply
- 26-item assembly with exploded isometric view and bill of materials
This is a design and simulation project; it has not been physically built. Images show the assembly render and kinematics; videos show the exploded view and the motion study.
