About the job
Location: Brampton, Ontario (Hybrid / Remote with On-Site capability preferred)
Engagement Type: Contract / Project-Based
Software Platforms:
Solidworks 2026 with Solidwork 3D Experience and/or Onshape (Seat/license provided)
Target Start: Immediate
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Contract Mechanical Designer/Drafter and Onshape and/or Solidworks (Design/3D Experience) Specialist to execute a dual-purpose project.
You will be tasked with modeling and re-drafting an existing heavy-duty parts bin, while simultaneously establishing our company’s foundational CAD infrastructure. We already have a physical sample on our shop floor, along with legacy hardcopy and scanned PDF drawings, so no from-scratch conceptual design is required.
A critical component of this engagement is knowledge transfer. We are looking for a professional who is comfortable working transparently—allowing 1 to 2 internal team members to shadow your workflow via Onshape’s cloud-native collaboration tools to learn manufacturing best practices.
Key Deliverables
Phase 1: CAD Environment & Infrastructure Setup
Before diving into the parts bin design, you will configure our standardized Solidworks/Onshape workspace to streamline all future in-house drafting.
Company Title Blocks: Design and implement standardized engineering drawing templates (A through D sizes). Configure metadata mapping so that part numbers, descriptions, weights, and material properties automatically populate from...

Configure metadata mapping so that part numbers, descriptions, weights, and material properties automatically populate from the 3D model.
Weldment & Profile Libraries: Utilize and/or Set up a custom library of structural shapes (square/rectangular tubing, channels, angles) matching our standard stock to ensure accurate cut lists.
BOM Structures: Configure hierarchical Bill of Materials (BOM) templates that integrate seamlessly with shop floor fabrication and supply chain tracking.
Branding Integration: Ensure templates are cleanly branded to support our operational transition (incorporating AMFT and SURmUN MFG nomenclature/logos as directed).
Phase 2: Parts Bin Modeling & Manufacturing Package
Deliver a complete, production-ready drawing package based on our existing design.
Legacy Conversion: Utilize our provided scanned PDFs, hardcopy drawings, and (if on-site) physical shop-floor measurements to accurately recreate the existing parts bin in Onshape.
3D Parametric Modeling: Create a robust, fully constrained model of the parts bin optimized for sheet metal nesting and structural weldments.
Weldment Drawings: Detail all structural framing, including explicit weld symbols, joint preparation details, and exact cut lists (lengths, angles).
Sheet Metal Flat Patterns: Generate optimized flat patterns with correct bend allowances and K-factors for laser cutting and press brake forming.
Assembly Packages: Produce top-level assembly drawings with detailed BOM callouts, balloon indexing, and clear hardware/fastener specifications.
Export Formats: Provide clean, production-ready STEP files, DXF flat patterns, and high-resolution PDFs of all drawing sheets.
Phase 3: Team Shadowing & Knowledge Transfer
Workflow Handover: Utilize live screen-sharing to walk our internal team through your design choices, template utilization, and assembly constraints.
Best Practices Document: Provide a brief, simple cheat sheet outlining the file structure, naming conventions, and revision control rules established for our workspace.
Required Skills & Qualifications
Solidworks/Onshape Expertise: Deep proficiency in Solidworks Design, Solidworks 3D Experience, and/or Onshape is non-negotiable. You must understand document data management, multi-part Part Studios, and cloud-based assembly configurations.
Manufacturing Background: Demonstrated practical experience designing for sheet metal fabrication, structural welding, and general machining. You must know what a welder or laser operator needs to see on a drawing to build it without guesswork.
Drafting Standards: Strong command of standard drafting practices, including geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T), structural weld callouts, and clean drawing layouts.
Communication & Mentorship: Excellent English communication skills and a collaborative mindset. You must be comfortable explaining why you are modeling something a certain way, rather than just working in isolation.
Proximity to Brampton (Preferred): While the CAD work can be done entirely remotely, preference will be given to candidates in the Brampton/Mississauga/GTA area who can spend 1–2 days on-site at our facility for shop floor validation and hands-on team onboarding.
How to Apply / Quote
Please respond with:
Your standard hourly contract rate or a rough flat-fee estimate split between Infrastructure Setup and Bin Drafting.
A brief summary or portfolio sample of past sheet metal/weldment projects you have executed.
Acknowledgment that you are comfortable working from scanned legacy PDFs and/or visiting the Brampton facility to verify measurements against the physical sample.
Your availability to begin.
