About the job
I. Project Overview:
We are seeking an experienced CAD professional in Vietnam (preferably Ho Chi Minh City) to help us convert 6 variations of our Noel chair collection from 3ds Max format into high-quality, clean STEP files optimized for 2D representations.
Note: This project will begin with a test phase using the Lounge Chair model to evaluate quality and approach before proceeding with the remaining 5 chair variations.
II. The Challenge
We have existing 3D chair models created in 3ds Max. When directly converted to STEP format, these files contain an excessive number of surfaces (similar to mesh geometry conversion issues), making them difficult to use for 2D representations.
We do NOT need direct file conversion. We need you to accurately remodel each chair using professional CAD software, using our provided files as precise visual reference.
III. Scope of Work
Test Phase:
Remodel 1 Lounge Chair to establish quality standards
Full Project (upon successful test completion):
Remodel 6 Noel Chair variations:
Armrest Chair
Bar Chair
Counter Chair
Dining Chair
Kid Chair
Lounge Chair
IV. Critical Quality Requirements
The final STEP files must meet these non-negotiable standards:
1. Clean Geometry:
Built with clean B-Rep (Boundary Representation) / NURBS geometry
Significantly optimized surface count vs. direct mesh conversion
Single continuous surfaces instead of multiple parts (e.g., loops should be one surface, not "2 donuts, 1 o...

IV. Critical Quality Requirements
The final STEP files must meet these non-negotiable standards:
1. Clean Geometry:
Built with clean B-Rep (Boundary Representation) / NURBS geometry
Significantly optimized surface count vs. direct mesh conversion
Single continuous surfaces instead of multiple parts (e.g., loops should be one surface, not "2 donuts, 1 oval, and 2 cylinders")
2. Smooth & Accurate Curves:
All curves must be smooth, not wiggly
Where loops and straight sections meet, use splines (not straight lines) that are tangent to the loops at connection points
All string/rope elements must be joined into single continuous parts, not multiple segments
3. Dimensional Accuracy:
Must precisely match the original design dimensions and shapes
Critical for architects using models in their 3D files—models must match the physical product exactly
Pay special attention to seat heights, backrest curves, and frame geometry
4. Optimized for 2D Representation:
This is the primary reason we need NURBS format instead of mesh
Files must produce clean, usable 2D line drawings with minimal cleanup required
No weird joinery lines or messy intersections visible in 2D views
Must work cleanly in both Rhino Make2D and SolidWorks Drawing functions
5. Complete Details:
Include all small details present in reference mesh (e.g., rope ends, connection details)
Separate bodies where appropriate (e.g., last 6mm of legs should be separate bodies with slight chamfers to represent plastic feet finishing the metal pipes)
For woven/webbing elements: Either (A) accurate approximation with proper joinery and intersections, or (B) continuous line representation
V. Deliverables
For Test Phase (Lounge Chair):
1x STEP file (AP214 or AP242 standard)
2D representations (for quality verification)
Native CAD file (optional but preferred)
For Full Project:
6x STEP files (AP214 or AP242), one for each chair variation
2D representations of each model (for quality verification)
Native CAD files from your modeling software (optional but preferred)
Reference Files Provided
For each chair model, we will provide:
3ds Max (.max) files
OBJ export files
FBX export files
VI. Required Skills & Experience
Expert-level 3D CAD modeling experience with Rhino or SolidWorks (strongly preferred)
Strong understanding of solid modeling and NURBS/B-Rep surface creation techniques
Proven ability to accurately interpret and recreate complex 3D shapes from reference meshes
Experience creating clean, production-ready STEP files optimized for downstream CAD workflows
Understanding of tangency, surface continuity, and clean geometry principles
High attention to detail and visual accuracy
Ability to read and interpret 3D models from various source formats
VII. Project Timeline
Test Phase: 2-3 days
Full Project (if test approved): 1 week total for all 6 chairs
VIII. Location Preference
Strongly preferred: Freelancers based in Vietnam
Ideal: Based in Ho Chi Minh City area
International applications will be considered for exceptional candidates
IX. How to Apply
Please include in your proposal:
Brief description of your relevant experience, especially projects involving remodeling from mesh/other formats to clean CAD
Portfolio examples demonstrating high-quality CAD modeling and clean topology/surfaces
CAD software you will primarily use for this project (Rhino or SolidWorks preferred)
Your availability to complete the test phase and full project within stated timeline
Your proposed rate or quote for:
Test phase (1 Lounge Chair)
Full project (6 chairs total)
Confirmation that you can provide 2D representations for quality verification
X. Additional Information
Our office is located in Ho Chi Minh City. We value quality over speed—the models must be accurate and production-ready. For any irregularities in the final models, we can be held liable by our customers, so precision is critical.
Thank you for your interest!
