Industrial Lathe Retrofit & Superfinishing System | Mechanical Design
Complete mechanical retrofit and modernization of an existing industrial lathe, combined with the integration of a dedicated superfinishing system for cylindrical components.
The project involved a broad redesign of the machine, including longitudinal and transverse carriage adaptations, new guards and sheet-metal enclosures, structural modifications, machine-way protection and mechanical integration of the finishing equipment.
In parallel with the retrofit, a superfinishing attachment was developed and integrated into the lathe, including its support structure, positioning system, longitudinal travel, drive components and operating requirements.
My scope included 3D mechanical design in SolidWorks, retrofit engineering, machine integration, fabricated and machined components, sheet-metal parts, protective systems, manufacturing drawings and technical support for fabrication and assembly.
The design was developed around the existing machine architecture, reusing suitable original components where practical while creating new systems to improve functionality, safety, accessibility and process capability.
The machine was rebuilt, modified and equipped with the new finishing system. This portfolio includes the original machine condition, CAD development, manufactured retrofit, installed equipment and manufacturing documentation.
Project materials shown in this portfolio are shared with authorization from the project owner.
