Development of an Electrically Controlled Micro Hydraulic Valve for a Hand Prosthesis

I developed a compact, electrically controlled one-way hydraulic valve for integration into an advanced hand prosthesis. The valve controls the flow of hydraulic oil to the finger actuators while preventing unwanted backflow, allowing the hand to maintain its grip without continuously powering the pump. The development process included mechanical concept design, CAD modelling, electromagnetic actuator integration, precision component design, material selection, prototyping and functional testing. Key challenges included achieving reliable sealing, fast response, low power consumption and consistent performance within the very limited space available inside the prosthetic hand. The final valve was integrated into the prosthesis’ hydraulic system, enabling controlled finger movement, secure grip holding and efficient operation in a compact, lightweight design.
