Experience

  • Mechanical Engineer Western Spring Mfg. · May 2017 – Apr 2019 1 yrs 11 mos Hugo MN Western Spring Mfg. is a custom spring manufacturer that does business with virtually all other industries (i.e. agriculture, defense, medical, aerospace, food). Products are primarily springs and wireforms, with the capability to handle wire diameters from the thickness of a human hair, to the thickness of a thumb.

While working at Western Spring, I had a number of internal and customer projects. Internal projects were long term and included process improvements, design of new machinery, repair and maintenance of existing machines. Customer projects had an average turnaround time of 4 weeks from order to product leaving the facility. Every customer order was unique and had varying requirements such as exotic materials, custom tooling, specialty coatings, extreme quality control and challenging geometries. This work environment was fast paced and required very good time management and communication skills.

    Job responsibilities included
    -New product development
-Revision changes with existing products to meet customers needs
-Quoting customers on manufacture of parts
-Meeting with customers to revise current springs to better function in end use assemblies
-Reverse engineering springs and wireforms for customers with physical samples and no design data
-Creating CAD models and engineering drawings that included all relevant data for customer and in-house parts.
-Quality control and dimensional inspection with force testers and optical comparators
-Contacting vendors to ensure proper coatings/ processes were done to parts that had specification requirements
-Improving manufacturing processes, reduce machines involved to manufacture a part
-Industrial automation and new machine design to increase manufacturing capacity/capabilities
    -Tooling design for existing machines
-Repair and maintenance of existing machinery
-Designed an ISO 7-8 clean room
-Comply with ISO 9001:2015 quality standards
