I have over 7 years of experience in the engineering field and the part I enjoy most about engineering is creating or modifying 3D CAD models. In addition to my engineering experience I have a lifetime of practical experience gained through my family's farming operation. I believe this is what makes me different from most engineers. The practical skills and knowledge I have allow me to use better judgment when designing and allow me to more thoroughly consider the entire life cycle of designs.

Experience

  • Senior Engineer John Deere Nov 2018 – Present 11 mos East Moline, Illinois, USA • Develop system requirements for powertrain components for crop harvesting machines • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop robust system requirements • Delegate and supervise the completion of tasks to reach program objectives
  • Test Engineer John Deere Sep 2017 – Nov 2018 1 yrs 2 mos Moline, IL, USA • Develop and supervise execution of test plans to verify hydraulic cylinder designs • Collaborate with technicians to assemble test stands and troubleshoot problems • Instrument test stands with transducers to collect data using eDAQ • Document test procedures and results using detailed reports with pictures, graphs, and data • Analyze data to estimate fatigue life based on expected duty cycles
  • Electrical Systems Engineer John Deere Mar 2014 – Sep 2017 3 yrs 6 mos East Moline, Illinois, USA • Redesigned position and speed sensing systems to reduce the number of warranty claims • Recognized opportunities to improve factory calibrations for more robust sensing systems • Assisted in the development and execution of test plans to achieve desired levels of reliability • Created and led classes to instruct coworkers on how to create models and perform tolerance stackup analysis • Worked to create common configurations across models to reduce product complexity • Modeled parts and created drawings per ASME Y14.5M-1994
  • Drivetrain Engineer John Deere Jun 2012 – Mar 2014 1 yrs 9 mos Waterloo, IA, USA • Provided support for current production 8R tractor transmissions to improve reliability and reduce cost • Interacted with cross-functional team members to make changes to current parts or implement new parts • Modified casting to reduce $150,000+ of annual scrap • Modeled parts and created drawings per ASME Y14.5M-1994
  • Research Associate NASA May 2011 – Aug 2011 3 mos Huntsville, AL, USA • Conducted personal investigation of small launch vehicle design optimization • Developed code in MATLAB to optimize the mass properties of a two-stage launch vehicle • Determined minimum size of launch vehicle by analyzing cases using different propellants • Interacted with aerospace industry leaders on a weekly basis

Other experience

  • Hands-On Experience Through Farming In addition to my engineering experience I have also been involved on our family farm for my entire life. This hands on experience has helped me think more clearly about the products that I am designing. I keep in mind how things will be repaired and I design to make that process as simple as possible. It can be very frustrating when things break on the farm. It is often clear that not much thought was put into designing things for easy repair or robustness so that repair is not necessary. It can be very difficult and time consuming to repair these things on the farm with limited resources available.
