Description:
Hi, we need to step our packaging game as we just won the biggest prize in the world for small batch bourbon! We have an existing label that we like very much, and it has a 2D design on it that I'm providing to you in vector and .dxf

What we want a talented designer to do is to turn this into a 3D model with the branches coming out at random angles around the circumference. It should look like a real tree with some leaves on it (leaves are in the vector file), but you may choose to adapt the shape to make the leaves easier to integrate into the final model.

The final design must be suitable for 3D printing and/or lost wax casting. It must actually be manufacturable. Your design should be easy to scale up or down, but we're thinking a final height of 5-6cm (2 - 2.25 inches) is probably the right size. The largest outer diameter should not exceed 40mm. The base should be circular and 32.5mm and also have a ridge that can be customized with embossed printing for each release of the bourbon.
Wants:
This needs to be suitably detailed, preferably with a subtle oak bark texture and also look good from every angle. The branches don't need to come to sharp points as in the vector art, but we do want the lightning bolt shaped crack in the trunk to go all the way through a round trunk. This is going on a $200 bottle of bourbon, so it has to exude quality and detail, and look like a real tree with the stylized lightning bolt element.
Don't Wants:
Please don't just extrude the 2D vector into a rectangular 3D solid and submit it. It should look like a real tree. Also, please make sure it matches the overall look of the label and the vector art.
Software:
  1. FreeCAD (Latest)
  2. SolidWorks
  3. Autodesk Inventor

@ FranckLouberssac: Understood. Thank you for the explanation. We would like the design to be 3D printable, but if the design can be done with a lost wax process that would be great too. We've talked to a vendor who does 3D printing and then plates the plastic with metal, but there is a local foundry that can pour these in volume. Finally, we have spoken to some people who are creating the "wax" using 3D printing, which provides a lot of extra flexibility to the process. Please use your judgment and in the comments to your proposals please note what efforts you have made to make this easily manufacturable. Our past experience is that we have a continuing relationship with designers after contests so we can get revisions as we move into manufacturing or print production. Thanks again.

Thank you for your response. I apologize if my previous message was unclear. I would like to clarify that my intention was not to suggest that you should 3D print a resin prototype at your own expense. Rather, I was trying to emphasize the importance of considering the final manufacturing process, in this case, lost wax casting, during the design phase.

The lost wax casting process involves creating a mold from a wax model of the design. This wax model is typically created by casting wax into a mold made from a master model, which could be a 3D printed resin prototype. The wax model is then encased in a ceramic shell, and the wax is melted out to leave a cavity in the shape of the design. Molten metal is poured into this cavity to create the final piece.

The reason I brought up the possibility of creating a resin prototype is that the design considerations for a model intended for lost wax casting can be different from those for a model intended for other manufacturing processes. For example, the model needs to be designed with the understanding that it will be replicated in wax and then in metal, which can affect decisions about the level of detail, the thickness of different elements, and the overall robustness of the design.

In other words, the design needs to be "castable." This means that it should not have any undercuts or areas that would prevent it from being easily removed from a mold, and it should be robust enough to withstand the casting process. These considerations might influence the design decisions I make during the 3D modeling process.

I hope this clarifies my previous message. I am committed to creating a design that not only meets your aesthetic requirements but is also suitable for your intended manufacturing process.
Thank you and have a good day .

@ FranckLouberssac If you believe that your design will be more competitive with photos of the resin prototype, feel free to submit it that way. We are not providing additional funds to complete that task. We wish you luck in the competition.

What an inspiring project ! In my experience, one of the most effective ways to ensure the success of a project like this is to create a physical prototype before proceeding to the final manufacturing stage. This allows us to evaluate the design in a tangible way, assess its aesthetics and functionality, and make any necessary adjustments before committing to the final production.

Given the intricate details of your design and the intended use for lost wax casting, I would recommend using a resin 3D printer for the prototype. Resin 3D printing technology is known for its high resolution and precision, which are crucial for capturing the fine details in your design.

If you don't have access to a resin 3D printer, there are several online 3D printing services available that can produce and ship the prototype to you. This can be a convenient and cost-effective solution if you don't have the necessary equipment on hand.

Would you be interested in creating a resin 3D printed prototype of the design? Your answer will help me better tailor my services to your needs and ensure the success of your project.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,

Hi All, after looking at the start of a design, we have noticed that the scale we first suggested may be a little small. Please consider making the tree at least 50mm tall with an outer diameter that is in proportion. We are always happy to look at and give feedback on preliminary designs. For 3D designs, please submit multiple views.

@ mitb2 I’m not sure I understand the question. The only part you are being asked to design is a 3D printed component that sits on top of the existing bottle and closure. You don’t have to worry about the bottle itself or making an element to fit the opening. All we want is a 3D printable version of the tree that has branches emerging like a real tree. We do not want a flat extrusion of the existing artwork as we can easily create that ourselves. I have posted a few pictures showing the types of toppers that other brands have created. Please refer to those pictures.

Will you shape the 3D tree to be drawn here and then shape the glass bottle? I want to ask this because if the top of the bottle is to be shaped, the back plane must be flat. So do you want it in relief or is it a full 3D?

@mitb2 Thank you for your question.

What we want to do is create a 3D tree that matches the design aesthetic of the tree shape that is on the label. The dimensions (except for the 32.5mm base that fits on the closure) are not critical. We will select the design that has the best look and integration with the label. If your dimensions are slightly off for aesthetic reasons, we will consider the overall design and it won't disqualify the design. I would suggest that this be seen as more of a design challenge than an engineering challenge. We want the best look for the product and we will happily work out final details with the winner. We hope this helps, and if you have further questions please post another comment.

@HOPSONBOU thank you so much for your question. We don't want the branches to stick out too far over the outside dimensions of the bottle. so if you create a 40mm diameter cylinder around the outside of the base, we believe the tree should fit inside that cylinder. That said, if you believe the design will be seriously compromised by this, please let us know and we will consider expanding the envelope.

The largest outer should not exceed 40 mm...you mean to say that the the branches extended must be under the surface cover by 40 mm diameter circular surface

2 ring designs for 3D printing/lost wax casting
looking to get the first 2 rings of my design recreated in CAD so i can get them 3D printed to be used in lost wax casting, the final products will be made of brass. RING 1: rectangle face with approx 28mm X 24mm with bart simpson engraving, in 2 sizes US10 (dia 19.84mm) and US8 (dia 18.19mm) RING 2: square face approx 14mm X 14mm with spider web engraving, in US6 (dia 16.51mm) and US8 (dia 18.99mm) each ring will need to have a sprue for casting, please see pictures provided. please see design sketches for rough idea of how they should look. i have included photos of other rings with a similar finish/engraving looking for someone that has some experience with 3D printing for casting but not essential, i also have more designs really to go for use on the same rings so would like to do more after these. this is the first time i have posted on anything like this so any feedback would be greatly appreciated. any software that can generate STL/STEP/IGES files should be ok price not set in stone either
Scale Honey Dipper Stick & Stand
Hello there! I'm looking to have a miniature honey dipper stick and stand/holder modeled for the purposes of CNC machining. They'll be handed out with our business cards and help promote our business at events. Thanks!
Hyperloop Concept Model
I need a concept design and 3D printing ready files (STL) for a Hyperloop Pod. The design should be inspired by the concept images attached. The design may be different from this concept drawing but follow the general inspiration of the concept. Creativity is still appreciated. The doors on the model should be closed. Interior features such as seats are not required. The compressor fan should be included and detailed. Please also include smaller air outlet at the back of the pod. The “air bearing” or feet should be included. The model should be scaled to be roughly 35mm in diameter and 250mm in length. For further information on the concept and inspiration see attached PDF file. “Hyperloop Alpha” This is for non-commercial purposes. The final files should be free of flaws and read to be 3D printed. I am flexible on software used. I need the CAD file and STL file as a deliverable
Escape Room puzzles
Hello, I am building an escape room themed like an Indiana Jones/Tomb Raider movie or games. Think lost temple (Aztec or Egyptian) style. If you have ever done an escape room and thought “I’d like to design a puzzle” this is the contest for you! I am looking for Puzzle ideas, that can be printed on a 3d printer (I have a FlashForge Creator 3, so my 3d printer supports a large build volume 300*250*200mm) the puzzle can be in many parts if big is your thing! The puzzles should be themed to the room and can use electronics/servos/sensors/switches anything I could build/control with an Arduino is fine. internally mechanical and “puzzle” designs are also welcome. The puzzle can be a single object or a set of objects (ie a locked object and a tablet with picture graphs as the solution/key to the puzzle.) Let the imagination run wild! there is the opportunity for continued consulting work for the winning designers, I am happy to take messages of ideas and give feedback, Q/A etc Software: As long as I can import it to Autodesk 360 and then to my printer I don't mind what software is used, flexible on this as long as I can print it!
Ultrasound brain helmet
Hello, I work in a research lab at the University of Utah. We need to make a frame that can hold a patient's head in place while we image their brain with custom ultrasound transducers. We have designed the transducers and general shape of the brain helmet. We are seeking solutions to 1) mechanically holding the head in place and 2) making the frame as aesthetically pleasing as possible. All mechanisms for adjustment (i.e. extention/retraction) should be complete in the design i.e. functional. I attached the solidworks files and a very quick (and ugly) sketch of the general concept. This is just the first idea so please take this as a jumping-off point and feel free to be creative! Our one requirement is that one of the head fixation parts be a sliding piece over the middle of the head that fixes to the bride of the patient's nose (called the nasion).
